97 Percent Without Power in Sparta

Police urge residents to continue to stay off roads.

Sparta Police said Wednesday that 97 percent of residents remain without power just two days after Tropical Storm Sandy caused severe damage all across the state.

Police said all residents are urged to stay off roads.

"Driving on closed roadways or unnecessarily traveling during restoration efforts are delaying the utility company's ability to make repairs and putting you at risk of injury or death," police said in a statement posted on their Facebook page.

Many roads are still closed from hazardous conditions, and residents should not travel on the roads that have barricades on them, police said.

Police also said Wednesday that volunteers from the Sparta Evangelical Free Church are willing to help clear downed small trees or limbs from private residences.

Police said anyone who wants to help out should call 973-300-1717 x12.

Any request for this service does not involve any wires, police said.
