Hopatcong 9/11 Memorial to be Featured in Book
The Port Authority featuring how towns used World Trade Center steel in their memorials.
Mayor Sylvia Petillo said Tuesday a story and photos about the borough’s 9/11 Memorial will appear this fall in a new book produced by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey highlighting how towns used steel artifacts from the World Trade Center to create memorials.
She said at the request of the Port Authority she wrote a description of how the steel was obtained and transported to Hopatcong from New York City.
She said borough officials went to New York to get the artifacts. Local fire trucks lead the way. While they were in New York, Petillo said, the public works department called towns along Route 80 to alert local police that the steel was going to pass through their town.
The result, she said, was that in each town local police joined the procession to lead the Hopatcong group through their town, resulting in a colorful and important trip down the interstate.
Petillo said she sent the Port Authority that story and several photos, and they said they would use both pieces in different parts of the book.

James-Nobody is saying they shouldn't be remembered. Nobody is suggesting they shouldn't be honored. However, in these economic times and with the town being in such financial dire straights wouldn't it have been better to put it in the already existing park or the already existing Veteran's Memorial? Especially since while the work was being done our Mayor was in talks with CVS to purchase that property. If it had gone through we would have had the cost of installing it, moving it, and installing it again elsewhere.

Bullshit! You people cry,cry,cry about how bad the town looks, and every time work is done you cry, cry,cry. And to cry about that memorial is pitiful, especially since a resident of our town was lost that day. Maybe if you were actually there that day you might feel different. Think before you bitch!

I for one think the memorial is in a perfect place, so easily viewed. I don't mind if some of my tax dollars went toward this tribute. I also think that Modic Park & Vetrans field are to secluded and it would be easy for vandelism to occur. Every time I pass this memorial I remember that day and I swell with pride in the knowledge that my Son was one who stepped up to the plate to defend this wonderful country of ours for 8 years following that attack.

Tammy, please find it in your heart to accept the Memorial at face value and appreciate it's significance to the community. Most of the cost was donated.

Tammy, sounds like you are. Your talking about the money spent and how we lost out on using it for a memorial Think about the families that lost more then money. they lost their loved ones. Have a heart women!!!!! this is not the post to point out your political views. It's about remembering the horror of that day and what we as a country lost.

Seriously people-No where did I say I was against the Memorial. Emily, I do have a heart, a very big one at that. James you are a fine one to talk about respect. You can't even respectfully disagree with someone. For the last time--I am happy that we have the Memorial, I am glad we all have somewhere to go and reflect. I am very sorry for all those who lost loved ones that terrible day and I am beyond grateful to those who have put their lives on the line to make sure this never happens again.

This twisted metal of doom, that is the focal point of our City Hall is very symbolic and elicits many intended and unintended reactions. For some it represents more than the lives that were lost on this day but also the American way of life that is now lost as well. This is especially so for those in our Town that face very hard economic times. The lost lives of 9/11 and the lost homes of 2012.

i lost family that day too i don't mind what they did but i am tired of the town complaining they don't have money for this and that but the maintenance department does alot of favors for their family cause i live on a block where the work is done on
