Hopatcong Cops: Juvenile Burglars Surrender

Police say the four juveniles who broke into Durban Avenue School and ran from officers Saturday turned themselves in Wednesday afternoon.

Updated 3:14 p.m.

Four juveniles who entered Durban Avenue School through an unlocked window, stole at least two coats and ran from officers Saturday afternoon turned themselves in around 2 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

The juveniles, who were caught on security cameras inside and outside the school, used the coats to cover their faces while inside the school, police said. Lt. Thomas Kmetz said the juveniles also entered several classrooms, but it was unclear if they had stolen more.

When patrol officers arrived on the scene, the juveniles raced through the woods by the power lines to the Veterans Field-area of Flora Avenue, police said.

Also, if you see them on the streets, you can text the police department too.

It's tip411 which is really 847411 and then start the message with hopatcongpd and continue writing as normal.

I have it added to my contact list in my phone just in case. :-)

I go to HHS and I find it hilarious that you people sit here and read stories about the kids of Hopatcong. Sitting on the internet talking trash about JUVENILES. You people are worse than kids in my school. Feel sorry for all of you.

Maybe, just maybe, they planned to fence the stolen kids coats and use the money to help Hopatcong's deadbeat dads. Ya think so?

I got to HHS too, but this is ridiculous. You do sit here talking trash about Juveniles, but you don't try to do anything to stop it. Maybe if we had a different Mayor, one who actually had guts enough to stand up and say/do something to stop this. Not bagging on the mayor, but if you want to do something about it, then that's an option. jazzman, wtf?

@Disrutpter; The problem with the teenagers of Hopatcong breaking the law and getting into trouble has been going on ever since i can remember. You understand where i'm coming from. It's not fair for these ADULTS to judge our classmates and friends. They're sitting here judging kids, yet no one tries to help. They sit here behind their computers, drinking their coffee, and gossiping about our town. Hey guys, get real. You sitting here doesn't help.

As a former Hopatcong student (for many years)... and now have kids in the system. I find your comments hilarious! Kids do stupid things. That is a fact. I'm not sure what you hope to happen "HHS191" and "Disrupter", would you like the parents and neighbors to stand guard around the schools in the off chance a teen decides to be stupid? We were all young and dumb at one time. I just seems this generation is dumber. They do stupider things, and get caught! Hahaha!! And just so you know it isn't the Mayor's job to patrol the teens of the town. How about parents being parents and making the kids take responsibility for their actions? We are called guardians for a reason. Otherwise, we should just hand our parental rights over to the government.

Considering the impending end of the school year, don't you think your time would be better spent making up assignments/projects or studying for final exams (if they still have them) rather than defending these d-bag perps?

They weren't just defending "these d-bags" their speaking for all young adults that are watched like youtube videos on this site. If you really want to go there, isn't there a tricky tray or a sporting event you could be helping with instead of checking the patch every 12 seconds.

are you joking? This was only a couple of kids. There are thousands of kids in this town who arent getting in trouble, who find stuff to do. Everyone isn't owed entertainment. How do you wind up blaming the cops for some stupid stuff a very small portion of the kids do ??? So many on here have such a small and narrow view of the world, we are doomed.

Excuse me, but these "d-bag perps" are my fellow classmates and I care about the way this town thinks of our teens and their portrayed. As for my "assignments/projects and finals" that's none of your concern. You're the adult here, act like one. And white snowflake, you're right. We don't have anything to do. If you aren't in a type of sport, then you spend your time getting yourself into trouble. I've seen it happen to far too many kids that I know.

Friendly word of advice, if you are going to call people uneducated, use spellcheck and use real words, not text lingo. You'll gain much more respect.

Okay, these kids made a mistake using very poor judgment and will have to suffer the consequences. I see no reason for name calling! I hope that they learn from this experience. I have said many times that the kids in our town need somewhere to “hang out” that is safe. For the young ones who have commented on here. You say there is nothing to do... what would you like to do? Do you have any ideas? If so, speak up about it. There are those that are reading, listening and would volunteer their time to help out. Maybe …. if you do, something can be put together and just maybe incidents like this one will stop. The ball's in your court... speak up, please :)

Ask "Interesting" for some advice. She has the Mayor's ear and is her spiritul adviser as well. If we would have just built that CVS it could have provided some part time jobs for many a teen.

You all have valid points. Kids need organized activities. Calling kids names does no good. It promotes fear and loathing. Hopatcong is not the only town where these things are happening. However, was anyone else concerned about an unlocked window? Maybe I have watched too many crime shows, but motive (nothing to do) and opportunity (an unlocked window) often lead to trouble by those who normally would walk the straight and narrow.
We have lots of good kids in this town.

So let me get this straight--It's okay that these kids went into the school and stole two items because there is nothing to do in this town? It's not their fault because they were bored? I grew up in this town and my friends and I never felt the need to break into a home, business, or school because we were bored. We rode our bikes, skateboards, roller skates. We played basketball, kickball, tag, etc. I suppose physical activity is a little insane to suggest to kids who can't even walk to their bus stop. Bottom line is no matter how bored we got we still knew right from wrong.

It would appear that the entitlement mentality that’s taken this nation hostage has spawned a generation of little vipers demanding to be entertained...or else.

I am also a student at HHS, and I find some of the posts on here absolutely absurd! I agree with my fellow classmates in the fact that the adults of this town *cannot* allow the actions of four students in this town to reflect upon the rest of the students. Whether any of you realize it or not, we have some FANTASTIC students in this town. In my own graduating class, we have winners of national scholarships, students going to top private institutions, and some of the highest SAT scores in the country (I earned a 2100). This school and this town are not at fault!

I will never understand why some people are so narrow-minded that they assume delinquency is both a "Hopatcong problem" and a generational problem. Kids break into buildings in all other towns; kids do drugs in all other towns; kids get arrested in all other towns. These problems do not stem from issues in the school system or in the town, but in the home. And that, quite frankly, isn't any of our business.

As far as what Chrissy said (that "this generation is dumber"), that is a ridiculously far-fetched statement. You only say that because you see the same actions that were occurring when you were a teen, but in a modern context and from a mother's eye. I'm sure when I'm older, many in my generation will speak the same thoughts.

Some youth in this town are spectacular, and some are dead beats. It just depends on which you chose to look at: the positive or the negative. Have pride in your town.

Well, live a little HHS students. Then come back and tell the adults what you actually fine absurd (in a few years). My comment meant that people (most especially teens) do dumb things. We ARE human, make mistakes and learn from them.

My comment in no way meant anyone IS dumb (on an everyday basis). It means sometimes people act stupid. Its just a slip up. There is no human kid, teen or adult that can say they never did something they didn't regret. No matter how smart they are.

With that said, in no way shape for form does that mean that if anyone messed up that is defines them as a horrible person or "dumb". Their act was dumb. Doesn't mean they aren't the most intelligent, highest scorer on whatever test you choose.

I meant this generation is dumber because I see things happening that I knew happened when I was a kid. Only difference, the kids were smarter and didn't get caught. OR technology got better, and we didn't have cameras and cell phones everywhere. So, it is more difficult to get away with things today.

ALL towns have stories of hiccups of bad judgment when it comes to people of all ages. Our town isn't as bad as most and yes, us parents are ACTUALLY proud of our kids!

As you grow, HHS kids you will learn not to take such things so personal. Life is to short, so you may as well have a little laugh at kids doing random acts of stupid.

LOL!!
