Hopatcong Cops Offer Click It Or Ticket Tips
As borough prepares for program from May 21 to June 3.
Recently, the Hopatcong police department announced it would participate in the state's "Click It or Ticket" program from May 21 to June 3.
On Friday, the department offered the following tips to borough motorists.
- Children under age 8 or lighter than 80 pounds must be in a child safety seat, preferably in the rear passenger seat.
- Drivers are responsible for all passengers younger age 18 and are not wearing a seat belt.
- Passengers age 18 and older and not wearing seat belts will be issued summonses.

8 years old in a child safety seat seems a little ridiculous. Not to mention, there are 10 and 11 year olds lighter than 80 pounds. Maybe it is just me, but I find this absurd.

What a waste of resources... with the crime in this town they are worried about seatbelt.

Believe it or not people still don't wear their seat belts, so like Emily stated if it saves a life it's worth every penny. I for one am sick of reading stories where people would have survived an accident if they just had their seat belt on or someone thinking it's a good idea to put an infant in a car seat in the front so the parent can better tend to the baby while they are driving. I think it's a great statewide program.

It's a shame that we need our overly intrusive government mandating how we protect our selves, be it seat belt laws, forced health care, smoking laws or the diet we consume. If people don't have the common sense to to the right thing, why do our legislators think they can legislate and mandate certain behaviors? Our town is struggling financially - I understand that. But how much of that is brought on or caused by our elected officials? I don't have the answer, but we are not a town that has outsiders typically traversing it - the majority of people that will receive seat belt violation summons will be Hopatcong residents. It will be a means to build up the town coffers, on the back of it's residents......not sure this is the right way to go about this. Hopefully, all residents will pay attention to this campaign, have everyone in their vehicle properly "seat belted" in accordance with the law, the town will spend it's grant money and not make a dime otherwise.

This is just another reason for the police to pull you over. Not that they even need a reason in this town anyway. If they see a kid driving especially at night, they are undoubtedly getting pulled over. They should use that $4,000 to towards some sort of drug related tasks, more specifically aimed toward heroin/prescription pills and their over abundance in this town. The cops should focus less on making friends with the scummy town kids that are the ones shooting up and get to the source of their drugs.

I have an idea for you people who disagree with this program the cops are doing. I know it may be a little absurd but WEAR YOUR SEAT BELTS. It's a national program not just a Hopatcong program. Quite your bitching and obey the law. Pretty simple idea if you think about it.

Tickets the morons who refuse to repair their mufflers or the hillbillies in pickup trucks who modify their mufflers to sound tough and loud - Rednecks, get over yourself a pick up truck isnt cool, grow up already! Seat belt law is ridiculous, it is a personal choice by the driver, its another money maker for the state
