Hopatcong Golfer Honored With Mayor's Award
Shane Sickles, recognized as top high school athlete plans, to attend Fairleigh Dickinson.
Mayor Sylvia Petillo presented Hopatcong High School golfer Shane Sickles the Mayor’s Award Wednesday in acknowledgement of his high school sports career.
Petillo said the award is presented to the athlete who brings the most attention to Hopatcong High School sports by their high level of performance.
Sickles, who graduated with the Hopatcong Class of 2012 was named Hopatcong's most valuable golfer in each of his four years in high school. He also earned three First Team All North Jersey Athletic Conference nominations, Petillo said. Sickles, the golf team captain, also had impressive showings at state PGA-sponsored tourneys and in tournaments held in the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania.
Sickles will attend Fairleigh Dickinson University in the fall.
Sickles said the award winner is picked by the high school coaching staff.

Once upon a time Hopatcong was known for it Golf Courses. Nice to see one remnant that is left of Hopatcong's Great Golf heritage it once had. Also recognition to the Sickles' parents who chauffeured Shane outside of Town to golf courses that were preserved and remain in other parts of Sussex and Morris County. Too bad it was not a Shooting sport. Our Mayor and Council have been very supportive to this sport with Open Space Land grants and town resolutions to support a private 400+ acre shooting club. Maybe someday some Wealthy CEO will want to be in an open space land trust to have a golf course and provide golf practice for the local youth instead of pistol practice at the shooting range. Nice to see Hopatcong's youth interested in wholesome outdoor sport.

Enough with the political nonsense!

James - Bite your tongue, if not for the political nonsense of our Dear Mayor these people would never get their due recognition. If not for the PR Photo ops how else would we find out about the good work in our town? When you keep the town in the Dark it hides the good news too. This kind of Political nonsense is a good thing. It was also nice of the Mayor to give more than 5 minutes to this, That's more than what a concerned taxpayer gets for a public forum.

Michele please move your soapbox somewhere else. This is not about the mayor. It is about a young man's accomplishment and determination. Congratulations Shane and all the best to you in college.

Thank you! Shane has always had the support of his family, friends, team and school. His parents have volunteered their time for many years and should be thanked for all they have done for Shane, the school and the children in the school district.

Too Bad Shane and his parents did not stay for the rest of the Town Meeting. They had their cake and left. It is important for our Youth to learn about our local Gov. Then Shane and his parent's would have found out that the citizen only gets 5 minutes to speak about important issues at our Town Meetings - a much smaller meeting segment than what was given to having cake and giving out awards. Shane and his parents would have saw our diminishing democracy after the cake. However, they ate their cake took their award and left the Town Meeting like so many others. Our clever Mayor knows how to work a room - got it down pat. "Congratulation and Bye-Bye - you don't want to stay to the end of this boring meeting do you?" Award dedications take big chunks of Town Meeting time. Guaranteed - the more important the topics on the Mtg agenda the more award ceremonies beforehand. She has it down to a science. Big Issues - Eat more cake. The good uninformed citizen. YES this is about the Mayor and her clever scheduling of Town Meetings. Getting everyone to think she is concerned about the people of the town and what they are doing. This was a Photo Op for the Mayor that made it in the Local Press with Patch and the Alternative Press.- a Public Relations job. Even the press is clueless to her modes operandi - Where there is cake there is ALWAYS a STINK BOMB afterwards. They just happen really quick before the foul smell can be identified and the Meeting has ended.

My apologies though for using this as a soap box issue. it is MY BAD for doing this. It was a very impressive accomplishment by Shane and I wish him a very bright and happy future ahead. He makes the future a bit brighter to know great kids can come out of our Public school system and excel. And I am sure a lot of dedicated teachers and coaches had some involvement in this too besides very involved parents. We need more Shanes in Town which would resolve 50 percent of Hopatcong's problems. Still fustrated by the other 50% - wish we could work together on that problem.

Emily & James can we count on YOUR HELP to attend these Town Meetings have cake and stay after the cake has been served. I was at the award ceremony and also the Town Meeting that followed - where were you? Just making my point across to the NO SHOW but I Love Hopatcong People. You know this is not going to be out on DVD we don't video record our Town Meetings even the award ceremonies although we have the technical ability to do so . So you'll have to get off your duff next time and get it live. Don't confuse Short - snarky comments on Patch as commitment to your community. You have to show up and be there.
Again Congrats to Shane! I was there -in - person- to cheer you on.

I was home baking a cake. Where were you at the farmers market. I do help. I pay my taxes, water bill, sewer bill on time, and I'm happy. Lately your very random with your posts, feeling okay. Now let's not start this going back and forth again because your just so easy to get to. Just maybe Michele, Shanes parents are happy with the way everything is . Your believing everyone is miseriable is getting quite annoying. Oh by the way your really don't love the people of Hopatcong because you keep trashing them if they don't go to a council meeting . How far have you gotten with that. I venture to say not far at all. I don't see any change and then again I am really not looking for one. I think they are doing a good job with what they have to work with. Sit where the Mayor is sitting and you'll be in the hot seat also. No one will like you and find fault with everything you do. If you don't believe that then you probably believe in the Easter Bunny. Have a good one!!!!!!!

Emily - thank you for your contributions and kind words. It's people like you and the Mayor that have made Hopactong the rich and wonderful place it is today. Hopatcong could not have made it on the BEST list without you. I tip my green "Hopatcong - Recycle to Keep Clean and Green" tote bag to you great citizen.

Let me tell you a little story about a man who fought high taxes in this town. In fact if you have been here 30 years you should remember this. His name was Thaddeus Wilhelm. he stripped down and put a beer barrel ,cowboy., hat and cowboy boots on and marched up and down in front of borough hall protesting high taxes. Guess what he accomplished. Make fun of the Green tote bag, mine is white and trashing me again because I was there as a good citizen. Have I got a barrel for you!!! As far as I am concerned you would complain and find fault if you lived in Buckingham Palace. Your knocking Hopatcong again so why do stay here, oh wait because you love the people. Your such a phony. No more going back and forth, it's useless, your stuck in Michele mode of your right and everyone else is wrong. I wear my I LOVE HOPATCONG button with pride high taxes and all.

Ted Wilhelm was a crank, and by his own admission, a wife beater. He used to pull the same stunt at BOE meetings. Great fun!

Michele you do need help. Again trashing me and now you involved my family. You want to attack me fine, leave my family out of this. I don't trash your family why do you feel the need to do that to mine. this an irrational person who insists on going after people and families she does not know. the thing you acccused me of is what your doing only with a vengence. What are you gaining by that. Disrespect on my part. Your a waste of my time. Please go get some help!!! Oh and I feel the love coming from you for the people of Hopatcong. Stick to the three people that are backing you. You'll go real far. My amusement with you is over your getting viscious and totally out of line with your comments.

James it appears that I frequent the same places on Patch and so do you. You can't accuse Emily of being all over the place as we both frequent the same places. Also, I did not drink Hopatcong water in my Youth. My family lived in a Town with an established and progressive Public School System. Hopatcong did not have a HS until the early seventies. We just took day trips to Lake Hopatcong and I don't remember drinking the water there as a kid. Emily states she was born and raised here and she is 68 years old. Therefore, educated pre Hopatcong H.S. days. So Emily has done a lot more childhood Town Water drinking than me. So let's go easy on what water I've been drinking because you and Emily have been raised on this water. Which makes your Patch comments on the water I drink and Emily being all over the place on Patch lame comments. Although they were short comments they were not very nice or very smart ones.

Emily - thank you for the apology to Shane and his parents. I did just that several comments up the chain before yours. I agreed that I was using it as a soapbox of my issue with the Mayor. Unfortunately you and James continued to trash this post with unrelated digs about me well after my apology. Now maybe you and James can follow me and find a newer post to match your wits against me. I have given you a handicap since you were educated in Hopatcong before they even had their own H.S.- that's when you walked the unpaved roads of Hopatcong to get to your one room school house. Tag! - it time to follow me to a new spot

Yes James pay attention. You should proofread yourself before you hit reply. I know you only type a few lines of incomplete sentences, but they still have to make sense. You actually did insult Emily. That's right you are not a teacher. So I can go easy on you for this mistake. No harm was done to the students of Hopatcong from your ineptitude.

Michelle, go play in somebody else's sand box from now on. Apologies should come from you, but your not a big enough person to do that. Then you would be wrong. Tammy is right, our comments have taken away from the good he has done. I am so sorry Shane and apologies to your family. I got carried away and forgoy what it was all about. YOU!!!!!!

James, That's the only thing she knows. Politics, she know nothing but insults, demeaning people then apologizing. Random acts of bashing, I like that word. She is so far off the issues of the town, how easy was that. Oh, now wait she'll come back with some sort of stupidity and insult. Love it. Now off to work I go HI HO HI HO HIHO!!!!
