UPDATED: Let Us Know When You Have Power

Help keep our interactive map up-to-date by telling us when you get your power back.

It's been almost two weeks since Hurricane Sandy left the borough completely without power.

While the power outages have slowly gone down, we know there's still many residents left in the dark.

Nine days after the storm on Wednesday, only 20 percent of residents had their power back.

Power was reportedly restored to most residents by Friday night, according to JCP&L's outage map. However, the outages fluctuated throughout the day on Saturday, rising to nearly 3,000 and then falling to 1,197 at about 9:30 p.m.

We have made an interactive map from the streets residents have reported getting their power restored. This is based off comments on this article and from those end Hopatcong-Sparta Facebook page and Hopatcong Police Facebook page, so please let us know if we missed your street.

The map shows streets with power as of Sunday night at 9 p.m. Let us know in the comments when your street is restored.

JCP&L restoration numbers are completely false. They did this last year too. They change them periodically to give the appearance of progress, but in fact they are complete fiction.

Even now, they say 76% of hopatcong has power, but talk to the office of emergency mangment in hopatcong and they will tell you 70% do NOT have power. the governor is going around saying how many people have been restored, but it's all based on fictional information from the utility companies. this should be a HUGE story but it's basically being ignored. Welcome to Socialism ladies and gents!

Can you explain what Socialism has to do with this?

Comment_arrow

Josh Dubnick

8:22 am on Sunday, November 11, 2012

Actually, Warren, you're wrong. If this were socialism, the government would be supplying the electricity and the workers to keep it flowing. In the few towns that do this, it works MUCH better than having private enterprise do it. Why? Because the municipal electric utilities have to answer to taxpayers and voters. The private companies have to answer to stock holders. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the municipal electric utilities to make sure that the power stays on while the private companies maximize profits by deferring maintenance, reducing staff and betting that Superstorm Sandy goes out to sea. So, while Hopatcong freezes in the dark, Park Ridge, Butler and Madison have lights.

Is there really power on Pebble Beach Road, Byram Bay Road, and Lines Avenue? (they are listed in the text of the article but not shown on the map). I did not think any portion of Wildwoods Shores neighborhood had power. I believe Lines Avenue/Pebble Beach still had power lines down as of Friday AM. Also the article listed "Northwood section" as having power, which is only partially true as of Friday AM (see post above for Northwood power comment)

I just saw a JCP&L crew finish up a couple of snapped poles on Brooklyn Mountain Road at Lackawanna (near the recent house fire). Didn’t see where they went but either they’re continuing up Squire to the West, or they left for the day. My block’s connection has been sitting in the street until now (saw them pulling a replacement). This is encouraging, since the route they’re following should light up a good portion of the boro from Lakeside up Brooklyn Mountain Road and beyond (hopefully including my block if they remember to throw the switch ;). Stay tuned.

Stephanie, I would hope that someone at the town was misinformed, not alerting the residents impacted in whatever section that is, is negligence and they should be alerted so they can make arrangements, prepare etc... But then again communication in this town is horrible from the "mayors department" and if that was the case schools would not open to after thanksgiving as well base on Dr Evils voice mail - school will open when all the power has been restored.. they dig deeper and deeper holes...

I just spoke (7:45 AM) with a construction supervisor at the St Jude utility crew staging area regarding the status of restoring electrical service to the Maxim Dr and Wildwood Shores neighborhoods. He indicated they were still working to repair the Main Lines in this area and hope to compete this today. They may be able to begin resorting power to some portion of the Wildwood Shores neighborhood Saturday afternoon or by Sunday.

BTW, there is NO power on Lines Ave, Pebble Beach Rd, and Byram Bay Road, contrary to what this Patch page is indicating. I have notified the editor of this apparent error. I walked these streets this morning and there is no apparent power. Generators can be heard running from start to finish. There are power lines down entering LinesAve/Pebble Beach and Byram Bay Rd, so until this are fixed it seems unlikely that there will be no power to these homes

Electric utility crew (contractor, not JCP&L) came back after noon and I saw them easing their way around the corner on Broadway. Appears they were working on the end of the high-voltage circuit (the one at th top of the pole) from those two snapped poles. That particular circuit dead-ends down that side street.

As of 3 p.m., electric power is back at the foot of Brooklyn Mountain Road and Lakeside Blvd, at the traffic light, but NOT turned on yet for the section between the traffic light and Broadway.

My dad spoke with a JCP&L rep and was told that only JCP&L workers are working 16 hour shifts. The subcontractors they hired only work as many hours as they want. And guess what? The only workers we had around here are subcontractors. So we got screwed. 7:51 Saturday night, still no power on Mohawk behind St. Judes. Tomorrow will be day 14.

Heads have to roll for this one. Your mayor is out. The top executives at JCP&L have to go too. I think Christie sealed his fate during his performance with Obama.

Its been 13 days and JCP&L spokesperson states that 99% of people have power. The numbers on their website are purposely misleading and our mayor is not taking a proactive approach. That's what happens when you run unopposed. To bad we have to wait until 2015 to re-elect a more capable mayor. Many towns around NJ are signing petitions to get rid of JCP&L. I say the citizen of hopatcong follow suit. Attached is a link about Wayne's initiative to get rid of JCP&L.

Heather,

On 11/2 (three days after the storm), in an article here at patch.com, Borough Councilman Michael Francis was quoted to have said, “…the power company has primarily been working at the substations in Hopatcong, because that's where the large distribution areas are. He said there are six substations throughout the borough.”

On 11/6 (eight days after the storm) Officer Robert Haffner said, “…the crews are working in the substations throughout town, and is unsure as to which areas will be geting their power back first.”

But now, on 11/11 (twelve days after the storm), we have learned (from your contact at JCP&L) that the substation that feeds your neighborhood was never repaired, even though by Officer Haffner’s and Councilman Francis’s statements, technicians spent most of their time in the substations (for at least eight days straight) while JCP&L repair crews were NOT working in the Boro to restore service to most of the residents.

It’s obvious that we’re not expecting these individuals to restore our electric service themselves, but I have to wonder what kind of professional would listen to this nonsense (from JCP&L), after hundreds of residents complaining, and not pick up on the fact that they were lying.

As far as I'm concerned, this is still an emergency, and those offices should be open for us. My office is open, I still have to go to work, and then come home to my cold, dark house that's filling up with dishes and laundry. As of about 5 p.m., JCP&L showed “1008 customers affected,” and when I checked a minute later the number then read “1007.” Did one household just get power back and didn’t report it here??? Or did JCP&L have their IT guys program the Outage web page with a random number generator to make customers think they’re really doing something?

“We expect to achieve full power restoration tonight, with the exception of customers in the barrier islands and shoreline areas….” Haven’t we hear that before?

On 11/8, JCP&L reported 2,074 customers out
On 11/10, JCP&L reported 2444 customers out

Did the contractors knock service out for over 400 customers just so they could “restore” them again?

In the middle of writing this, my laptop battery died suddenly and would take a couple hours to charge. Since then, it looks like most of the power in the Boro has been restored, with my block probably being the last (end of the line as I traced it). So it’s probably too late to be the first to report, “Brooklyn Mountain Road from Lakeside Blvd. up to and beyond Broadway is back on!”

Just a minute, I was half serious about the JCP&L web site. As of a few seconds ago (8:55 p.m.) JCP&L showed “1,161” customers affected. Obviously that’s not correct with almost the entire Boro restored.

So I opened the same web site (http://outages.firstenergycorp.com/nj.html) with Internet Explorer and it now says “15” customers affected, while Firefox still says 1,161 customers affected. That’s not right, either. Other people have also noticed the numbers going up instead of down (i.e. on Friday the customers out was about 820, then went up to 2,444). Something very strange going on with the numbers reported at the JCP&L “Outages” web site.
