Man Pointed Gun at Cops, Resisted Arrest, Police Say

Guns, drugs found in Hopatcong home Tuesday evening, authorities report.

A Hopactong man was sent to jail in lieu of $100,000 bail after pointing a handgun at a police officer during a search of his home, Lt. Thomas Kmetz said.

Police went to Carentan Road to serve a temporary restraining order on Dennis Nayman, 60, at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Kmetz said. The order came with a search warrant for potential weapons and allowed the officers to conduct a search of Nayman’s home, Kmetz said.

When police asked Nayman to hand over any weapons, he didn’t cooperate, Kmetz said. Officer Bill Sutphen then went with Nayman back to a bedroom in the home, where the resident quickly went toward a nightstand and grabbed a small glass marijuana pipe and shoved it under his pillow, Kmetz said.

At the same time, Nayman had grabbed a handgun and turned toward Sutphen, pointing the firearm at the officer, Kmetz said. Sutphen, who was already going after Nayman’s hands, knocked the gun to the ground and tackled the homeowner onto the bed, Kmetz said.

A group of officers assisted in arresting Nayman, who resisted before being fully restrained, Kmetz said.

A subsequent search of the home yielded a double barreled shotgun, an air rifle, a bayonet, a pump shotgun, a loaded 9 millimeter handgun, a box of several 9 millimeter hollow point bullets, several marijuana smoking pipes, rolling papers and a bag of marijuana, Kmetz said.

Nayman was treated for cuts to his arms as a result of the struggle during the arrest, Kmetz said. He also complained of back and neck pain and was taken to the hospital. He was charged and processed after being released.

Nayman was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, resisting arrest, possession of prohibited weapons and devices, hindering, obstruction, possession of controlled dangerous substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Nayman was lodged in Sussex County Jail.

Mr. Nayman was lucky the officer would of been completely justified in shooting him. Great job to the boys in blue, another scumbag off the streets.

Just proves police work is a dangerous, and stressful job. They never know what they will be walking into. In this case thank God no one was hurt and kudos to the officers for their quick thinking, restraint, team work, and for protecting the resident(s).

Congratulations Officer Sutphen on a job well done. Could have made the front page in a way that no one wants but your judgment and quick action averted a major incident and, boy, would the anti-cop people be all over this one. From the story it sounds like this guy is one we could do without in our town. Let’s see how long it takes the courts to set him back on the streets of Hopatcong. We can be proud of our cops and confident in their abilities.

The state of NJ has very strict limitations on the possession of hollow point bullets. What I took away from the story was that these were what led to the charges of possession of prohibited weapons and devices. The search warrant itself was for guns, so a judge did find sufficient evidence to exist to allow the search and seizure.

The guy will get his "due process" but there is nothing unusual about getting arrested for violating a restraining order, possession of drugs/paraphernalia, threatening an officer with a gun, etc. Congratulations Officer Sutphen on a job well done. This guy was from Elba Point section - most of the scum resides up in the transient rentals in the "Hills".

The quotation "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." comes from Shakespeare's Hamlet and it sure seems to apply here. You are certainly welcome to draw your own conclusions but “Something’s rotten in Hopatcong”which is kinda stolen from Shakespeare!

The Hills are transient? Yeah lets see anyone who lives here try to get out. You can't no matter how much you try. Doesn't sound very transient to me. Guess you rich folk up in Elba point finally got some trash your way. Hopatcong as a whole is disgusting. Lets not make this about the rich or poor side of town. The rich side of town isn't rich, you're just slightly less poor than the poor side. Glad to finally know the Hills residents aren't the only people who have to be surrounded by scum.

Most of us probably would leave if our property value hadn't taken a 40% hit over the past 4 years. Plenty of people HAVE left, and their credit probably got trashed because of it, all you have to do is look at all the empty houses around town. Those of us who refuse to trash our credit or who have our houses paid off and refuse to take the $100K+ loss are stuck here.

Sutphen turns them all into snitches causing the revolving door affect, which leads to awards ceremonies with the mayor, more promotions, overtimes, pension packing and costing the tax payers more money then its even worth, but thats your currupt NJ and its courts system, family court judges to criminal court judges, and proscutors to lawyers all some how conspiring together with just the nods and winks

lets brake it down.....1 aggravated assualt = May or may have not pointed a gun in the general direction of the officers on scene,2 prossesion of a weapon for unlawful purposes = unregistered weapon, in the state of NJ that sounds like the norm,3 resisting arrest = he may have or may have not tighted up while attempting to securing the subject,4 processing of prohibited weapons and devices = omg its the end of the world hollow point bullets,5 hindering and obstruction = attempted to hind his smoking pipe under his pillow,6 processing of a control dangerous substance = little bag of weed man,and finally 7 prossessing of drug paraphernalia = that Gdam pipe that started the whole thing!

SUPER - This is what I use - ain't bad. Sometimes I had chopped walnuts to give it more of a kick.

INGREDIENTS
3 or 4 ripe bananas, smashed
1/3 cup melted butter
1 cup sugar (can easily reduce to 3/4 cup)
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
METHOD
No need for a mixer for this recipe. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). With a wooden spoon, mix butter into the mashed bananas in a large mixing bowl. Mix in the sugar, egg, and vanilla. Sprinkle the baking soda and salt over the mixture and mix in. Add the flour last, mix. Pour mixture into a buttered 4x8 inch loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour. Cool on a rack. Remove from pan and slice to serve

So the cops came to serve him a restraining order. Ok. Why the search warrant? What are the other details that are not reported here. Unless in this state when you are served a restraining order your not allowed to have guns, so the cops look you up and see if you have any registered weapons, then get a search warrant to search for them, then enter your house unannounced, and ask you where the weapons are so you go to your night stand and get it and hand it to the cop and he knocks it out of your hand and tackles you, it hurts alot because you are 60 years old and can't bend like you used to, so the cop decides to call that resisting arrest, because you can't bend your arm behind your back, it just won't go, and you are still wondering why the hell they are there anyway.

the name of the inspector was Mark King. You can tell he is a rascist. He doesn't like asians and white people with money. He does everything he can to exert his authority and take their money. I let him by for now, but the next incident I am going after him and his job. He is making errors in judgement. Basically i am giving him plenty of rope to do himself in. He is going to tangle himself all in it. he is not real bright.

When I used the word "transient" in regard to the Hills, I was referring to the many run down shacks owned by slumlords that refuse to maintain and keep them in good repair and rent them out to the first unstable moron that can come up with security and a months rent - the turnover rate is high and these dumps just continually recycle. There are plenty of well kept homes in the Hills, with their owners residing in them - I meant no reference to them, I would bet they know the neighboring dumps I am referring to and its unfortunate for them that they have to put up with it.

Frazure, you can actually blame the government for the condition of the rentals. I bought a dump in morristown to rent. I kicked out the day laborers that lived there gutted the place, put all new electrical, plumbing, windows, siding floors, everything. Then I started looking for high status renters. I found them. I started looking for the next dump. then.... My new tax bill came. 26% higher, property maintenance inspectors showed up fineing me for not getting a certifciate of habitability before my new tenant moved in. Which I already just got a CO not long ago. But they wanted more money, so they fined me 300 dollars plus 120 dollars for an inspection. So the next time the old moved out and new moved in, i called them to come out and inspect again. he came and fined me again 300 dollars, a day in court, and i had to pay 120 for the inspection. Why, because he said the new tenants must have slept in here before he inspected, so he fined me for that.
All my extra money i had planned to keep for up keep and maintenance is just going to the useless town thugs. I stopped my investment in morristown.

If the pd had informed him if the process and explained what was going to happen, this could have been handled better. PD entering your home is offensive and needs to be handled as such. Why was the man walking around without supervision???? Big mistake. Don't be such a glory hound looking to save the day by instigating a problem. It was a warrent and all weapons would be taken until the matter was resolved and the pipe if not listen on the warrent had no bearing as it is not what they have been sent to obtain. Handled properly the man should have been asked to sit observed while police inspected each area of the home for weapons including any loaded firearms which is not illegal and makes good spence for a man to protect his home. His action that brought the restraining order and search as well as his desicion to grab a gun where poor choices but lets not pretend there was nothing to learn from the situation.
