Man Pointed Gun at Cops, Resisted Arrest, Police Say
Guns, drugs found in Hopatcong home Tuesday evening, authorities report.
A Hopactong man was sent to jail in lieu of $100,000 bail after pointing a handgun at a police officer during a search of his home, Lt. Thomas Kmetz said.
Police went to Carentan Road to serve a temporary restraining order on Dennis Nayman, 60, at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Kmetz said. The order came with a search warrant for potential weapons and allowed the officers to conduct a search of Nayman’s home, Kmetz said.
When police asked Nayman to hand over any weapons, he didn’t cooperate, Kmetz said. Officer Bill Sutphen then went with Nayman back to a bedroom in the home, where the resident quickly went toward a nightstand and grabbed a small glass marijuana pipe and shoved it under his pillow, Kmetz said.
At the same time, Nayman had grabbed a handgun and turned toward Sutphen, pointing the firearm at the officer, Kmetz said. Sutphen, who was already going after Nayman’s hands, knocked the gun to the ground and tackled the homeowner onto the bed, Kmetz said.
A group of officers assisted in arresting Nayman, who resisted before being fully restrained, Kmetz said.
A subsequent search of the home yielded a double barreled shotgun, an air rifle, a bayonet, a pump shotgun, a loaded 9 millimeter handgun, a box of several 9 millimeter hollow point bullets, several marijuana smoking pipes, rolling papers and a bag of marijuana, Kmetz said.
Nayman was treated for cuts to his arms as a result of the struggle during the arrest, Kmetz said. He also complained of back and neck pain and was taken to the hospital. He was charged and processed after being released.
Nayman was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, resisting arrest, possession of prohibited weapons and devices, hindering, obstruction, possession of controlled dangerous substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Nayman was lodged in Sussex County Jail.
