Man Stole $345 Out of Vehicle, Police Say

Hopatcong resident allegedly smashed window and took cashed paycheck.

A 20-year-old Hopatcong man smashed the window of a vehicle on Papakating Road and took $345 in cash, Hopatcong police said. Police said they identified him in the crime while questioning him about another he was charged with.

Charles Baum, 20, was charged with burglary, theft, and criminal mischief in connection to the incident, which police said happened on Aug. 20 at about 2 a.m.

Police said the owner of the vehicle reported the window had been smashed with a rock overnight, and that her paycheck, which she had cashed, was taken.

Police said they identified Baum as the person who committed the burglary while they were questioning him about a stolen car from New York. Baum was also charged in that case, as he was arrested for being in possession of stolen property, according to police.

Police said Baum was processed, charged, and later released.

I assume he must've known her, to know the cash was in the car......? I wouldn't think many people leave their cash in their car........but maybe? Or maybe she forgot it was there....whichever way, I am glad they caught the burglar! Hopefully she got her money back.
