No Additional Damage From Nor'easter, OEM Says

Roads are clear, power outage numbers remain the same.

Hopatcong may have gotten a tiny break after getting hit hard by Hurricane Sandy last week.

The Nor'easter that started hitting the state on Wednesday night didn't have much of an impact on the borough, according to the OEM.

Officer Robert Haffner, coordinator of the OEM, said there were no additional outages from the snowstorm, and all roads are clear.

"Nothing really was caused additional by the storm," he said. "It was just an inconvenience for a little while, that's all."

Haffner said the trucks were out throughout the night, but they're done clearnig the roads now. He said a lot of the roads are dry.

The borough still remains 80 percent without power, 10 days after Hurricane Sandy caused severe damage across the borough.

Borough officials say they are in constant contact with JCP&L, and crews are out working 16-hour shifts everyday.

So far some residents have reported having power back on Chincopee Avenue, Lilchester Road, River Styx Road, Amherst Way, and Elba Point.

Hundreds of residents have been staying at the shelter set up at Hopatcong High School, as donations of food and clothing continue to come in throughout the country.

The school is now a regional shelter, and has been accepting residents from nearby towns. Mayor Sylvia Petillo said the shelter won't turn anyone down from staying.

Petillo recommends residents to sign up for emergency alerts at the Sussex County website by registering at http://www.sussex.nj.us/ and clicking the Outbound 9-1-1 icon.

The non-emergency number contact for the borough is 973-810-8346, and for emergencies call 911.

So - we know the town is 80% without power, and we've already heard that the mayor is in "contact" with JCP&L. What we want to know is WHAT is JCP&L saying????? WHERE are they working? We need more INFO!!!

thank beachbum, would be wonderful if Hopatcong and other towns banded together too. Residents can also file a compliant directly with the Board of Public Utilities-

The problem with the page is that Social Media is meant to be a stream of updated information real time. When the page has no new information or updates 24 hours later it is just as good as a static website. Great idea with poor execution.

If borough officials are in constant contact with jcpl, why not forward that to the people of the borough...in my industry, if we experience an outage, we constantly are in communication with the user population...our mayor and our oem officer are pathetic.....

Spoke with the linemen staying here at Split Rock last night. 16 Hours is their Maximum shift due to the CDL licenses required to drive the trucks. If they hit 16 hours and 1 minute their trucks can be impounded and they are forced to stay where they are. The guys here budget their time to get where they are going, perform as much work as possible and then be back here at the end of the 16 hours. The thing Ioved today was 40 + linemen from the midwest are sitting in the lobby waiting for their NJ assignments and none are coming through. I was told several crews sat in their trucks in the parking lot yesterday for over 8 hours with no assignment. Once they get to the point of no return they cannot be dispatched. These guys are so nice and have been very nice to my family and kids. They would rather be working than sitting in a hotel lobby getting paid to wait.

If crews are out working 16-hour shifts every day and in 10 days they have restored power to 20% of the town, doing the math it might mean that will take only another 40 days to restore power to the 80% left without power, so by December 18 we should all have power.

Thanks, Resident of Hopatcong. I've just reported JCP&L on http://www.state.nj.us/bpu/assistance/complaints/inquiry.html. Wonder if they'll get back to me. I'm at my wits end. I want the mayor, the head of JCP&L, head of Verizon, and all responsible for not working in our town to sit in a freezing cold house for 2+ weeks to see how we feel. Then maybe they'll get their asses in gear. I'm sure they are all nice in cush in their homes.

Did i miss something? When did electricity become the governments responsibility or a guarantee? Its a service/product you've chosen to pay for. I know we cant shop around anymore than the mayor can "flip a switch". This 100 year old infrastructure was destroyed in hours. This is what your grandparents meant when they said save for a "rainy day". Not for a new tattoo or a new Iphone. learn how to take care of yourself and take care of each other.

Bet you have power. It is the government that allows these monopolies to exist, isn't it?
I'm gonna go listen to our governor talk like a tough guy and get nothing accomplished..if i have enough batteries
