Power May Not Be Back On for Two Weeks, OEM Says

JCP&L's projected Hopatcong power restoration numbers on Sunday were not met, officer says.

The 1,900 homes that JCP&L said were going to get power back Sunday night remained in the dark Monday, the Hopatcong OEM coordinator said.

Officer Robert Haffner, coordinator of the OEM, said it was unclear why the utility company was not able to get the power back to the residents. He said the latest prediction for power restoration in the whole town is within two weeks.

Some areas around the borough have gotten their power back, while the majority of town remains in the dark.

Police said the center of town by the Municipal Building first got power back on Saturday night.

Residents have reported having power back on Chincopee Avenue, Lilchester Road, River Styx Road, Amherst Way, and Elba Point.

Haffner said the crews are working in the substations throughout town, and is unsure as to which areas will be geting their power back first.

JCP&L spokesman Mark Nipowski could not give an estimate on Monday when Hopatcong will get its power restored or why the 1,900 homes did not get their power back, but said the majority of customers throughout the North Jersey region will get their power restored by Wednesday night.

He said there were 2,900 customers in the borough without power as of Monday.

Nipowski said throughout the territory, there are 8,200 workers involved in the restoration efforts.

Mayor Sylvia Petillo said there were 19 JCP&L workers out in the borough on Sunday working to restore the power.  She said crews have been working 16-hour shifts daily to clean the debris from Sandy's damage to get the power back up and running.

When they get to us, they get to us. It's not as if they are not trying. It's a HUGE task to take on. Thank you to ALL the workers for the work that has been done and the work this is being done. Shameful and sinful and a real slap in the face of all the residents sitting home every night in the dark, trying to do what they can to keep warm.

Most of you surely see the same where you drive about. I havent seen any crews on Brooklyn-Mountain or Maxim or surrounding neighborhoods. Residents themselves are putting caution tape and reflectors on fallen trees ! There are still many HIGHLY TRAVELED roads with big HAZARDS and I've only seen 3 crews around. these workers are getting a beating out there...SOMEONE... Call in the reinforcements!!! Someone of authority like the mayor or our congressmen!!! Email or call Frelinghysen or Lautenberg! Do it now...Hopatcong and Sparta has been forgotten ...we need to get on our elected advocates asses so that they do that...advocate for our towns w/o gas, light, heat, water, and education. I know we are lucky compared to our fellow citizens to the south (at least those of us without a tree smashed into our homes), but being luckier than someone else isn't keeping any of us from freezing at night. TRUTH: JCP&L (First Energy Corp.) published a report to Gov. CTISTI on country by county, town by town basis on Thursday of last week. Gov. Cristi published the report to everyone citing it in his speech on Saturday, stating that it was his way of holding the power company responsible. Hopatcong Patch, and Hopatcong PD both published the link to the report. The mayor has referenced those numbers in her updates as well. IT IS NOT THE MAYOR'S OR BOB HAFFNER'S FAULT THAT JCP&L DID NOT PERFORM AS PROMISED. IT IS JCP&L'S FAULT! Did any of you know that VERIZON is responsible for putting up a good number of these poles? Verizon is responsible for tree clearing and pole repair/replacement on many of the downed poles. JCP&L can't do anything about those trees or poles owned be Verizon. Yet no one is complaining about the lack of Verizon crews in town. This nonsense of blaming the Mayor or Bob Haffner is stupidity! You people really need to get a clue as to how thongs get done.

Ok...so thanks for finally giving us the clue. Guess what? I am not a Verizon customer. I do not use their cell phone service, I do not use them for a landline phone, I do not pay a bill to them every month. The people I do give way too much of my hard earned money to each month? JCP&L. As far as I am concerned, they are responsible for my power restoration. My responsibility is to contact JCP&L and report my outage. It's JCP&L who needs to work together in conjunction w/ Verizon to get my power back up and running. Has JCP&L contacted Verizon and told them to get their asses out here and fix the trees and poles? I don't know, because they won't tell me a effing thing. So regardless of who's at fault, that makes it JCP&L in my book because everytime I ask them for any kind of information at all they don't give me anything. If JCP&L wants to give me Verizon's # the next time I call to complain, I will be happy to call them.

Verizon may be resposible and you may be accurate in your tale of how things are done. But the mayor and cooridinator of oem are most definitely responsible for getting answers and communicating to the people that is their job during a disaster, so if they just sit on their rump and say its not my fault they are useless! if they dont' have any responsibility for anything why the "F" are they anything at all - theres a reason towns have an OEM and cooridinator and it's not to do nothing at all but point fingers and say not me, i didn't do it! Officer Haffner has not done his job and you can defend him all you want but its the truth! If was responsible for something at work and just said I don't know, it's so and so's job I would be fired!

The town should've had all able and willing residents help with clean up. The man power just sitting there in the town waiting, could've helped this along so much quicker. With all the chainsaws owned by the residents the trees could've been gone in no time clearing the roads for utility workers. I just don't get it!

Great insight. If that is the case, it is good to know. Someone from they Mayor's office should be communicating it to us, not leaving us all to figure it out on our own. I do not want our Mayor at the Shelter. There are plenty of volunteers capable of handing out sandwiches. She needs to be getting information to us, instead.

Josh Dubnick

11:03 am on Tuesday, November 6, 2012

This is completely unacceptable. This is the third extended outage Hopatcong has suffered through in two years. Each time JCP&L put out restoration time lines and each time they missed them.

In my travels through town, I have noticed that most, if not all of the broken poles are the old, darker, and heavily splintered poles. The newer poles, which are larger in diameter, not splintered and lighter in color seem to have survived the wrath of Sandy. (even if the lines were knocked off of them). It's much faster to restring lines to a pole that's standing than it is to install new poles.

Of course my observation is not scientific and I haven't been through the whole town. Have others observed the same thing?

If this is true, then the extent of the outage and the length of time for restoration in Hopatcong can not be blamed simply on an "act of god" but is, in fact, the direct result of JCP&L's lack of adequate maintenance. I don't know what the projected life of a wood utility pole is but it most certainly is not "forever". Splintered and bent poles are clearly more likely to break than newer, more robust poles. When will our elected officials gather the courage to tell JCP&L to take a hike and either get our own electric utility in Hopatcong (buying power from the grid but also with backup generators of our own) or we could join Sussex Rural who answers to its members rather than to stock holders.

It's obviously a monumental task, but the most frustrating thing is the lack of communication / flow of information. There hasn't been a single utility worker in our neighborhood yet. Not one. I'm sure they're working very hard, but without seeing the actual boots on the ground on our streets, my confidence level is very low. The only reason some of our streets are somewhat passable is thanks to a few residents with chainsaws. We still have lines laying in the roads, services poles snapped and dangling in mid-air, streets completely blocked by trees. It's a mess! They should at least come through and take care of the immediate safety concerns.

2 weeks is not acceptable. Why doesn't the mayor or Haffner get on the phone with JCP&L and demand shorter turn around times and hourly updates. If they can't get that they should escalate to the govern. I have a 19 month old son I can't bring home because we have no heat. My wife is about to go into labor any day and when our second son is born I can't bring him home because we have no heat. I still see lines down on Maxim, when will these be fixed? And now another storm is coming, oh great.

But hey, we have the shelter right? Petillo, not everyone can go to the shelter, I'm not going to have a small child run around the place while my wife tries to breast feed a new born. GET THE POWER BACK ON NOW!!!!

Dunkin was running on a generator, not sure if they still are today. Joey's is open too. People are posting on facebook where they have power in Hopatcong. Maybe you can look on there to see if your area is starting to get power? I know I have been checking the facebook page continuously.

This is criminal! We pay taxes but our government continues to fail us as other towns lobby hard for quick repairs while our mayor sits silent. There is rumor that News 12 is coming to Hopatcong so please, anyone in town, make it known just what a terrible job our local government and JCP&L are doing and the lies they are telling us. With winter now bearing down on us, we are in even more need of electricity. I am no slouch when it comes to survival and have done well so far with a wood burning stove and grilling but as a professional, I need power to do my work and pay my bills. Shame on you Mayor Petillo and JCP&L!

I know many people have lost everything in this storm. I feel for them. I pray for them. It doesnt change what we are going through more than a week later when majority have electric. To those who feel we shouldnt complain, how can you sit back when you cant even get an answer as to why they cant get power restored. How can some of you down us for expressing our fustrations and sadness. You dont know every individuals situation that may be so much more sever than yours. Some have run out of money and cant afford the gas to get food at the sheltors.

I agree but what can we do? The problem is the lines are down, new poles need to go up, transformers need to be replaced. I'm not making any exscuses but to make this happen you need heavy machinery and skill set's most of us don't have. In my line of work when we have an emergency we have 8 hours to recover it or we are fined $10K a minute. My customer will go as high up as possible to get the issue resolved ASAP. And they will sit on a phone call until it's resolved. We need the OEM and mayor to do this with JCP&L, PSE&G and the governor

I have not seen ANY crews doing ANYTHING and we are a block from the middle school! Oh, except for the road and water work (a scheduled project not an emergency issue) the town has started YESTERDAY to dig up the roads! WTF! Like we don't have enough problems with the town doing NOTHING to restore us...we cannot afford this!!!

Can somebody explain to me how any of this is the Mayor's fault? Last time I checked Mayor Petillo is not Mother Nature nor does she have any magical power to compel JCP&L to restore all of our power. You have a storm of a life time that knocks power out to 2.5 million homes. The Borough looks like a war zone of trees, wires and poles and yet you blame the Mayor? It was JCP&L that reported to the Mayor that power to 1,900 homes would be up by Sunday. Not her fault that she reported back. Power is on in the center of town because that is where our Police are. JCP&L restores power in the following manner. Emergency Services, Vital infrastructure such as water treatment and sewer pumping stations. Then they go to areas where they get the most bang for their buck. If they can get power back to 10,000 people in one shot they go there. If it is a cluster of 10 homes without power they will be towards the end. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and be thankful for all that you have. There are people that lost families and everything they own. Instead of complaining about how unacceptable this is, give thanks for what you have. If your cold go to the warming shelter. This stinks but let's stop blaming the Mayor.

Its just a numbers game for JCPL. Restore the easiest areas first and say " oh we have 1000 people with power today". While the hardest hit area waits. Take a picture of the scene at the high school and send it out. Start making some NOISE!!!

Mayor totally lost control of this one - Everybody in Hopatcong you know what to do when re-election (3yrs) comes up - Hopefully I will be long gone from this town by then - Contact News 12 - 732-346-3200 to report status so crews report on this issue

I can't help but laugh, all the people who think the Mayor or Robert Haffner have any ability or power to tell JCP&L what to do are ridiculous. Do you think Hopatcong is the only town with this mess? People are suffering all over the state, so get over yourselves and deal. At least this town has a shelter, many others do not have anything in place.

The center of town if very important to get up and running. I have no power at my home either but I was thrilled to see that we can go to the service stations, the ATM for cash and most important the pharmacy for crucial medications. If that was the focus for a couple of days, I can live with that. Help your neighbors, Hopatcong. We are in for a long haul.

The biggest issue is lack of and conflicting information. If I'm not getting power back till X day, I might not be happy but as long as on X I get power back I can live with that because I can plan around it. The current information on the town web site is inadequate, that on the JCP&L website is apparently fictional. All I ask of the Mayor and the OEM is to get accurate informaiton from JCP&L and let the world know about it. She/they can't climb up a pole and fix the wires any more than I can - they can keep the pressure on for real information.
I just keep telling myself that my house may be cold and dark but it's standing, my family and friends are all alive. That's what really matters.

If you need a hot shower the North Jersey Health and Fitness in Ledgewood where the old Ramsey was will let you shower there even if you are not a member. I saw a sign at the Health Club on Rt. 15 by Arura lighting making the same offer. Thank you to all who are donating their time and working at our Shelter at the High School where you can also take a hot shower and get hot food.

If we had Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty's character from the Golden Girls) for mayor, instead of wimpy Silvia Petillo.... maybe some communication would happen, and we'd get some action! It's nice that she wants to cook for the folks at the H.S. , but she should be the mouthpiece for our needs.

We ALL know that the shore took a huge beating and people are homeless...and we've been patient (8 days worth)...but don't you think we deserve a fair share of utility crews here where we have been desperate as well ???? We are ALSO displaced from our homes and schools!!!! If there were a crew anywhere near my home in the past 8 days I'd be grateful n handing them coffees and high fives(since that's all I got) ....but there are NONE! I've seen 2 truck loads of telephone poles just sitting there...the crews are NOT here to fix them!

At this point....'manning up' is speaking out for our community however we can

Here's something...JCP&L Outage report. Yesterday morning, it showed 4,000 something people affected, 6,000 something served, and 66% affected. ( I don't recall the exact #s but I know affected was in the mid- 4000s and served was in the mid 6000s).

Today, as of right now, it shows 2773 affected, 6540 served, and 42% affected. So if approx 2000 people were served, and 20% of customers served, then why is the # of customers served still 6540. Shouldn't the # of customer served have gone up into the 8000s? They are full of shit.

Frankly, I don't care so much about the lights, the no heat and no water part bothers me. I am sharing a generator my neighbor offered to let me plug my refrigerator into it so that I won't lose my food like I did the last 2 hurricanes. I unfortunately don't have the money to purchase even a small generator to power anything. I am worried the pipes in my house will burst from the cold and worried my trees that luckily withstood Floyd, Irene, and now Sandy may end up coming down yet.
But you know what? I really no longer care, I am that fed up with all of it, I called my bank today who holds my mortgage and told them one more week and I am walking away, do what you have to do. There ya go Syl another $8k in property taxes out the window. Keep it up, soon it will be a ghost town; it'll be so quiet you'll be able to hear your self aging.

The town is a disaster and it is completely unacceptable . The residents of the this community lives are on hold and it is beyond comprehension that we may not get our power back for weeks. I pay 8000 in taxes for nothing, my electric bill averages 200 a month for nothing. JCP&L should be brought up on charges for theft, I can't go back to work my home is 40 degrees and I try to get my child out of district for school. I hate the town, its leadership and the companies that serve the residents. I have lived in the town since 2005, building a home here has proved to be the largest mistake in my life....I feel bad for my family because of the mistake I made in deciding to move here. Since 2005 this is at least the 8th prolonged outage of power and I believe the third in the last year......To all the politicians, I know the town is a complete pit but we are human beings who when our taxes are due pay, when our utility bills are due we pay and finally on this election day when the time comes to vote we keep or remove you from office. The mayor should be ashamed, i know I'm ashamed to live here.....PLEASE HELP THE RESIDENTS OF THIS SMALL TOWN BY LETTING US GET BACK TO OUR LIVES!!!!!!!

Ok everyone, go to town hall and sign up to volunteer...move some debris, bring your chainsaw, and if you can't do that, pass out coffee. This is our town, and we should all assume some responsibility to get our community back! Complaining isn't going to do anything but get us more wound up. There's no official volunteer program, but if we pool what's left of our resources, we can get this show on the road! A few people I know, including my own family have cleared some trees from the road and cleaned some debris already. We all want our power back, let's do what we can to make that happen.

I just got off the phone with the mayor and she was very helpfull. She shared with me what is going on. Hopatcong has been assigned a rep from JCP&L. That rep is not giving us acruate numbers. We are missing residents from the list that JCP&L uses for hopatcong. The mayor has been workign with Washington to get us help. After my long talk with her i feel alot more confident then ever that mayor petillo is workign with us not against us to get this issue resolved.

Amongst the down poles and wires in my area, we also had a tree sitting on top of a utility pole. Not sure what if any damage was done to the pole but it was leaning pretty low, but appeared to be intact. I'm at work, but I got word that an Asplundh (Sp?) tree service was finally at our location to deal w/ the tree. So I feel good that that is getting done, however that only involves the tree and has nothing to do w/ power restoration. A step in the right direction for sure, but I'm still not seeing anything about power getting done anytime soon. I called news 12 NJ myself yesterday, so I'm sorry I missed them in town, where were they by?

ABSOLUTELY CRAP!!!!!!!
The mayor had her power restored and then sent the trucks to Mt.Arlington from what I heard.
I also agree. How can we get power back if NO TRUCKS are around. I was hocked to see lakeside blvd open.
I live on skidmore and no one around me has power. Go figure the center of town has it first though wtf,.
Every other town has power pretty much BUT Hopatcong. I am pretty fed up with this town.

After this debacle is squared away I think it would be appropriate for two things to happen:

1. Fire the entire existing Administration and get some new blood in there every election it's the same people or the other usual suspects that get elected it's a ridiculous cycle. As you can see, "experience" is NOT always dependent on how many years you have "performed a task".

2 A Class Action suit should be filed against JCP&L and the Board of Utilities if for no other reason than to have it docketed and duly noted as a matter of record.

But what do I know, I am at the "Walk-Away" point, I realize that would do enormous damage to my credit history but at this moment I am not concerned about that issue at all. So if anyone out there is looking for a good deal on a large comfortable home, let me know....

I live on Indian Trail, Hopatcong, and it is now November 10th. and still no POWER from JCP&L!!!! who dropped the ball here.... you call customer service and all you get is... your account number please, your name... then you start all over again about the situation and the response is... we will be putting in a new ticket for you because you previous one has expired...?????What the Hell are you talking about.. been without power since 5:18 PM Monday, Oct. 29th along with many others. but have yet to see a truck except for yesterday, Nov 9th. 2 trucks to be exact on Lakesdied Ave. which runs into Indian Trail. Then I was told that my power comes from Dover, NJ sub station??? We want a reliable person if any that is associated with JCP&L to tell us what the hell is going on and a representative of the town that can give us some peace of mind in this aftermath instead of all the lies that have been told. Lakeside Ave. has been hit hard which leads into Indian Trail... half of all the trees were cut by our own....we need help up here!!!!! 2 wks and no power has damaged alot in some homes who btw have septic and well which is most of us...now saying this Sunday, Nov. 11th... I will be calling this morning to see what lie I hear next....
