Small Business Saturday: Shop Hopatcong and Sparta

Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.

Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves.

What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over Hopatcong and Sparta?

That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born.

Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on.

American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Hopatcong and Sparta. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally-owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities.

Locally-owned businesses across the country now take part in Small Business Saturday, offering their own deals to rival those offered the day before on Black Friday. Some local shops are, however, offering Black Friday specials as well.

Sparta Books is offering one such Small Business Saturday deal where customers who purchase a hardcover adult book can buy a paperback book for 30 percent off, according to store manager Gina Delcampo. The store is also offering 20 percent off children's picture books, and buy one cook book get one for half price.

Here are some of the local businesses participating in Small Business Saturday, as per the Small Business Saturday website. To find participating businesses in towns nearby, click on “Find Out Where To Shop” in the menu at the top of the screen and type in the ZIP code of your choice.

Joey's Pizza in Hopatcong was open during the power outage, and they made pizza by flashlight for customers. When I wasn't sure if I had enough money to buy a pizza, the owner said I could pay another time. Luckily, I had enough to cover the cost, but this was a great example of community spirit, and I will be sure to remember their kindness and patronize their business!

JP at 3&1 Deli offered to accept checks during the storm, allowing me to preserve cash until I could find an ATM/bank open to get any cash. Station Hardware (Landing) also showed similar incidents of caring. Hopatcong Hardware DID NOT - (stated "Cash Only.....!). In addition to HH not carrying much of an inventory, I've decided not to shop there any longer. The owners are my neighbors - but I am no longer their customer.
