Who's Hopatcong and Sparta's Person of the Year?
TIME magazine named President Obama their person of the year for the second time. Tell us who you think should win from our town!
On Dec. 19, Time magazine named President Obama their Person of the Year, again!
The magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including the president, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle, Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. But, the president took the title again four years after he first won the award as president-elect in 2008.
But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is Hopatcong and Sparta's Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse”?
Tell us your pick in the comment section below!

Wait a minute, “Timespeak”? Has someone been watching the old movies, like Orwell’s 1984?

I vote Harry Stickle. The kid gets a bad reputation, but he is one hell of an animal lover and a family man.
Anyone that knows Harry would vote him as our town's person of the year.
Harry has done a lot for our community behind the scenes, and the fact that what this young man does is out of your sight makes what he does that much more honorable.
Harry has contributed numerous, unnecessary hours to the animal shelter.
I would be nowhere without Mr. Stickle, please vote for him

TIme Magazine's criteria over the years has changed a bit - "Person" of the year isn't necessarily a person whom should be celebrated for all the good reasons, but can also include an individual who has had a major impact on your world - positive or negative. Obama fits the latter category and was deserving of taking the "honor" twice. God help our country, because this man certainly won't.

I'd like to recognize my son, Mike Wichart, for organizing the purchase and delivery of 45 turkeys to go to needy residents of Hopatcong after the superstorm "Sandy". Mike has NOT forgotten his roots!

I believe kevin from franks pizza should be nominated. This guy is very passionate about the town and does just about everything he can for the people. He donates to almost every charity or cause that comes to him, he donated to Hopatcong sport teams and supply most of them with food, during super storm sandy he remained open to serve food to people and donated trays of food to the shelter, whever someone passes in town that he knew he goes to the family and donates good to that family and he does so much more. he's a great man, hard worker, and I have never met anyone of caring and giving as this guy is. that is why I believe he should be our towns 'person of the year'

Let me see if I am getting this right: The "Pizza Guy" is the person of the year?

I believe Marilyn Durning should be the person of the year.
She works very hard keeping her property clean and neat.
Her house is always decorated for all special occasions.
She is well-liked at work, and well-liked by all the neighbors. She is not a politician, nor a sheesh seeking office or publicity. In my opinion, the people that know her from this town will back her.

I would like to nominate Vito Castoro, although he has passed, his contributions to the town of Hopatcong will live on for years to come.

I would hands down have to nominate Dale Sloat for his compassion and care to the animals of Hopatcong and the countless other towns he works in conjunction with. And let's not forget that in the wake of personal loss (the loss of his home during hurricane Sandy) he continued to do what he does and provided shelter, food and saftey for the animals displaced by Sandy. Dale puts himself, and sometimes his own saftey aside to help those that can not help themselves !!!

Sandy was the best, my special needs son ate solid food for the first time in nearly 1 year. Plus sandy forced families to resort to simple times. I think a lot of families reconnected. Sometimes the worst brings out the best.

I vote for Dale Sloat as well! His dedication to the pound and the town's "creatures" far exceeds anyone's expectations in that position!!
But I do have to "reprimand" Dale in his choice....I am sorry but Harry is not an example of Hopatcong....he is the one who gives our town the name it does. I am glad you see him behind the scenes but the public knows he is NO ROLE MODEL and did it ever occur to you the reasons he helps at the pound?? It's called "Community Service"!

To every volunteer Group who showed up at the Hopatcong HS Shelter and had no political gain for doing it. Also to every anonymous business person who dropped off food such as cakes, pies, pet food etc. Every neighbor who had a generator and invited in their neighbors that did not. Every person who help remove fallen branches that blocked roads, or put up signs of blocked roads and tied plastic bags to flag low road hanging wires; that rescued a pet, got supplies for the elderly homebound,To sum it all - the Face of The Goodwill Folks of Hopatcong

You are so right Michele. Everyone who reached out to their neighbors anonymously and unquestioningly are the true heroes of our town. They “most influenced the news this year” in a positive way and then went about their business without looking for recognition. As they reached out anonymously, let them all be recognized anonymously. They know who they are. Thanks to all of them.

Have to go with Vito Castoro. For every effort he made there were many more behind the sense contributions that he made without any mention. He was always ready to donate his and the resources of his company to the town. He will be missed and should be remembered. This would be a fitting tribute to Vito.

My vote is not for a person, but a thing. The Hopatcong Community Garden, It has bought beauty and togetherness to the town. While honoring Alice who had the idea.

Funny how NOT one elected official from our Borough has been suggested to be on the list so far. Did we not vote for these people because they made a promise to make Hopatcong a better place. If they have made good on their promises there should have been several submission here - sadly so far there are none. I guess prayers are not the answer to everything Mayor Petillo and yelling insults to your questioning constituents at Town Council Meetings has not gotten me to submit your name to this list either.
