Not about a hurricane, but close enough for me. Love the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FhVbyeWFvo And a different Citizen Cope tune for the hard days following. Saw a better side of the world in all that bleakness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWroFdk6RH8   more ›

A Quintessential Springsteen Guide

'Bruce Springsteen FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Boss' hits bookstores Tuesday, Oct. 16

Westfield resident John D. Luerssen grew up listening to the music of Bruce Springsteen, getting his initial introduction on Tremont Avenue courtesy of a friend's older brother. Today, Luerssen, a PSE&G supervisor in Cranford by day, music critic and author by night, releases the paperback Bruce Springsteen FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Boss, his second foray into the FAQ series. With a list price of $22.99, the book, at 400 pages, takes readers on the journey of a Jersey boy with a guitar and a dream who rose to stardom, gracing the covers of Time and Newsweek simultaneously, yet never forgot his roots. Luerseen, who played in a band during his years at Westfield High School, explained that after having written several cover …

Peter Pan Taking Flight at Palace Theatre

Musical will open the 2012-13 season for the Growing Stage.

It's time for the 2012-13 Growing Stage season to take flight. "Peter Pan–the Musical" will be the first show by The Children's Theatre of New Jersey, located at the Palace Theatre on Route 183 in Netcong. Shows start Friday and run through Oct. 14. The production is under the direction of Stephen L. Fredericks, the Growing Stage’s executive director, with musical direction by Laura Petrie and choreography by Jillian Petrie.  Peter Pan, like its namesake, is a tale which never ages. Children and adults alike have all fallen under the spell of Neverland, a place where children can fly and exciting, frightening adventures happen every day. In 1985 Piers Chater Robinson adapted J.M. Barrie's book for the stage, and now, over 25 years later, …

Netcong Theater Bringing Popular Actress Back to Life

Judith Helton appears as Lotta Crabtree this weekend in one-woman show.

Before television and before motion pictures, Lotta Crabtree was the most popular actress in America. Born in New York City in 1847, Lotta began performing at the age of six in the mining camps of the California gold rush. Famous enough to be known simply as “Miss Lotta,” she was the most popular actress of her era. In a one-woman show, actress Judith Helton brings Lotta back to life at an appearance at the Palace Theater in Netcong on Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Lotta Crabtree maintained a summer cottage at Lake Hopatcong for many years, just a few miles from the theater. This performance is a collaboration of the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum and the Growing Stage Theatre, which makes its home at and operates the Palace Theatre.    Tickets …

It was a lovely evening. I enjoyed the one woman show. The actress who played Lotta Crabtree gave a history lesson on how difficult the journey from the west coast to the east coast was before there was a cross country railroad system or the Panama Canal . It was also interesting to see the Growing Stage Theatre and the work they had put into renovations. They have big plans to make it …   more ›

'Jersey Shore:' What is Show's Lasting Impact on NJ?

Did MTV's raucous reality show change national perceptions of the Garden State?

MTV's Jersey Shore may soon be history, but will images of drunken misbehavior, boardwalk brawls and ample helpings of "gym, tan, laundry" characterize the Garden State for years to come? On Thursday, MTV announced the show would not return after its sixth season, taped this summer in Seaside Heights, airs this fall. But what is the lasting impact of the TV series that many say put the worst of the state's stereotypes on display for millions of viewers across the world? Were the antics of the eight housemates on Ocean Terrace just a few young people having fun, or has it done permanent damage to the state's reputation?

'Jersey Shore' Canceled By MTV

Final season will begin airing in October

Love or hate its rambunctious cast, the show that made Seaside Heights famous - or, at least, infamous - is going off the air. MTV announced Thursday afternoon its hit series "Jersey Shore" will end after a recently-taped season airs this fall. The sixth season of the series, which since 2009 has chronicled the oft-drunken misadventures of eight 20-somethings living in a house on Ocean Terrace in Seaside Heights, will premier Oct. 4 at 10 p.m. The network will air "Gym, Tan, Look Back" as part of a farewell marathon Sept. 6, and the cast will make an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards that night. The network has not given a reason why the series is ending. In addition to the well-documented antics at local night spots such as Karma, …

Taylor Swift Chats With Jefferson Actress

It's been an exciting time for youngster Chloe Scharf.

Chloe Scharf of Lake Hopatcong is having the kind of month a child can usually only dream of.  First, Scharf won the Best Actor Award at the Manhattan Film Festival for her role in “Nora,” a 15-minute film about a young girl with a terminal illness. Now, according to a report by NJ.com, she is hanging out with celebrities, including meeting her idol Taylor Swift. Scharf was reportedly on the set of an advertisement for Macy's when she met the popular singing star. But not only is she meeting people from the music world, but she has also reportedly met "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro. Besides “Nora,” Chlor has a list of films, television shows and plays to her credit. She started acting at the age of five, and after several regional productions…

American Classic 'Damn Yankees' Hits Local Stage

'Measure for Measure' and 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' also opening soon.

Everyone seems to have Olympic fever these days, and while there's no show about gymnastics or diving playing on stage anywhere, you can see an old-fashioned show about another sport—baseball. That's because Pax Amicus Castle Theater in Budd Lake is presenting "Damn Yankees" Aug. 3 to 19. The show follows Joe Boyd, a fan of the hapless Washington Senators who makes a deal with Mr. Applegate (also known as the devil) to turn his team into a winner. It features famous songs like "Heart" and "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets." Other shows opening soon include "Measure for Measure" at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," at the Brook Arts Center. There's also still time to see "Nunsense" at …
