New Sparta BOE Members Plan to Involve Community More

Three newcomers defeat school board incumbents in Tuesday's election.

After three newcomers defeated Sparta Board of Education President Keith Smith, Vice President Dorothy La Beau and board member Isa Wolf in Tuesday's election, the newly-elected members are already planning where they want to see the district improve. John Surdoval, who braved the storm last week and stood outside campaigning, said he believes three things are most important for the school district. "I think to improve the academic performance for all the children, having honest and transparent budgets to the community, and really involving the community a lot more," he said. Surdoval, who has two children ages 6 and 7 in the district, said he would like to involve the community more by giving them opportunities to voice their opinions. He…

Christie: I Did Not Embrace Obama

'I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time and if the President of the United States did a good job, I’m going to say he did a good job.'

A day after President Barack Obama earned reelection, Governor Chris Christie dismissed critics who have accused him of bolstering the president during Obama's post-Sandy visit to New Jersey. “I wouldn't call what I did an embrace of Barack Obama," Christie said. "I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time and if the President of the United States did a good job, I’m going to say he did a good job." Speaking to reporters as Winter Storm Athena prepared to batter the already storm-shocked state, Christie was also quick to dismiss speculation of a 2016 presidential run, saying that the life and death issues inherent with back-to-back storms have made politics a minor focus for now. “I've got a job to do in New Jersey. My future, whatever it …

'Record Number' of Voters in Hopatcong Tuesday

Sparta also had a large turnout on Election Day despite Sandy devastation, officials say.

The hundreds of residents displaced by Hurricane Sandy didn't stop them from making it to the polls Tuesday, as Hopatcong saw a "record number" of voters, according to Borough Clerk Cathy Gleason. Gleason said lines started forming at Hopatcong High School before 6 a.m. to cast votes, and by 3 p.m. there were over 3,000 voters, which she said was significantly higher than the last election. "The voter turnout is really heavy," Gleason said. "People have been in and out all day." Borough residents could either vote at the high school or Municipal Building, after Sandy caused the closure of nine other locations that the residents in the 12 districts usually vote at. Gleason said despite the devastation that the borough has faced recently as …

Barack Obama Wins New Jersey

Voters in New Jersey on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 14 electoral votes.

Barack Obama won New Jersey’s 14 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in New Jersey. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.

While there are bad apples on both sides, at least Republicans do not mock purity, honor, and family values. Republicans are upset when their fellow Republicans fail to live up to those ideals. Democrats think it is all one big funny joke.   more ›
