Halloween Curfew on Sparta Agenda, Kids Read to Dogs and More

Your daily planner for Hopatcong and Sparta includes daily sanitation pickup schedules for the community and a game day at Hopatcong's Senior Center.

Here's what you need to know for Tuesday.

  • Are you a Hopatcong senior? This is your day to kick back and have fun with fellow residents over classic board and cards games at a Senior Social. The good times get underway at the Hopatcong Senior Center, 32 Lakeside Blvd., Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Refreshments are provided, and the activity is free.
  • Children ages 5-10 are invited to practice their reading skills by reading aloud to a certified therapy dog at Hopatcong's Louise Childs Library,  21 Sparta Road in Stanhope. The special Read to a Dog event allows each child a full 10 minutes of one-on-one reading time. The dogs won't criticize, so the kids gain self-esteem, confidence, public speaking skills and a love of reading. Sign up your child for for a specific time slot:  4:00, 4:15, 4:30 or 4:45. Register your young reader by calling the Louise Childs Branch at 973-770-1000. The library recommends arriving on time with a couple of books or early enough to pick out some library books.
  • The Sparta Township Council meets Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Among the items for discussion will be an ordinance seeking changes to the municipality's Comprehensive Land Management Code and a proposed resolution on the subject of a Halloween curfew. Residents are invited to come, offer input and hear what town leaders plan to do. The meeting takes place at Town Hall, 65 Main St. in Sparta.
  • Keeping It Clean:  In Hopatcong, sanitation crews will follow Garbage Pickup Schedule A and Recycling Schedule D. In Sparta, check with the online schedule.
