Read to a Dog at Louise Childs, Games with Seniors on Lakeside Blvd.

Your daily planner for Hopatcong and Sparta includes news of youth and senior activities, a pre-Thanksgiving municipal meeting plus important curbside leaf pickup information for Sparta.

Here's what you need to know for Tuesday.

  • Seasoned citizens get to give thanks together Tuesday at a Hopatcong Senior Game Social. Gather for friendship, fun and refreshments. The pre-Thanksgiving event takes place at 1:30 p.m. at the Hopatcong Senior Center, 32 Lakeside Blvd.
  • Children ages five through10 are invited to practice their reading skills by reading aloud to a certified therapy dog at the Louise Childs Branch of the Sussex County Public Library. Each child gets a full 10 minutes of one-on-one reading time with dogs, who don't criticize or interrupt, allowing the kids to gain self-esteem, confidence, public speaking skills and a love of reading. Each child signs up for a specific Read to a Dog time slot:  4 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 4:30 p.m. or 4:45 p.m. Register by calling 973 770-1000.  Please arrive on time with a couple of books or early enough to pick out some library books.
  • The Sparta Township Council has not released a meeting agenda as of press time, but the body is scheduled to gather for its monthly session Tuesday. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at Sparta Town Hall, 65 Main St.
  • Keeping It Clean: In Hopatcong, sanitation crews will head to Garbage Pickup Section A;  no recycling pickup is indicated on the calendar. In Sparta, check with the online schedule.  By the way, Spartans, here is a weekend headsup: Curbside collection of bagged leaves comes to Sparta between Dec. 2 and 6. The leaves must be in biodegradable Kraft paper bags. Brush must be tied in 4-foot lengths. You may leave an unlimited number of these bags for pickup. The pickups will occur on a random basis, so to ensure pickup, all bagged leaves and bundled brush must be placed at curbside by Sunday at 7 a.m.  If you need the bags, now is the time to make sure you have them. You can buy eligible Kraft bags for 40 cents each at the Sparta Library, at the Sparta Public Works Department or at various retail outlets.
