'Midsummer Jersey' at Hopatcong High 'Smokey Joe's Cafe' Has Rare Screening in Sparta

Your daily planner for Hopatcong and Sparta includes news of the monthly United Way caregivers' meeting and sanitation pickup information.

Here's what you need to know for Thursday.

  •  The United Way Caregivers Coalition will hold monthly Thursday meeting at noon at the Tri-Co Federal Credit Union at 47 Route 206 in Augusta. The gatherings, held on the first Thursday each month, are open to the public and intended for people interested in caregiving. Members are welcome to bring lunch and eat during the meeting. For info, contact Robin Ennis at 908-579-3040.
  • It's opening night for the Hopatcong High Drama Club production of “Midsummer Jersey.” The best way we can describe it is as Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" set on the Jersey Shore as envisioned by MTV. The student company takes to the boards at Hopatcong High School auditorium Thursday at 7 p.m. Other performances of the comedy will be offered Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Remember, there are no small parts, only small actors. Breathe, have a blast and break a leg, kids! Same advice for you, audience members. Tickets are available at the door, $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and students.
  • Nice. The Sparta Digiplex Theater is one of the few screening, for one night only, "Smokey Joe's Cafe," a cinematic version of Broadway's longest running musical revue of all tim. The show features 40 songs of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, music that provided the soundtrack to the lives of a generation of Americans. This Tony-nominated and Grammy-winning show features the original cast. Showtime is at 7 p.m.; tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for seniors and students (plus a $1 convenience charge per ticket, if you buy it online). The theater is at 25 Center St. in Sparta.
  • Keeping It Clean: In Hopatcong, sanitation crews will head to Garbage Pickup Section C and Recycling Section B. In Sparta, check with the online schedule.
