Construction Help Needed at Lawrie Street Perth Amboy Morris Habitat Build

A unique volunteer opportunity is available this summer.  Morris Habitat for Humanity has their first home building project in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, as a joint venture with Perth Amboy Redevelopment Team for Neighborhood Enterprise and Revitalization (PARTNER)  and the Perth Amboy Housing Authority. Starting in July additional help will be needed to complete this ambitious project.

A new 3-bedroom single-family home is being built on Lawrie Street and will be sold to a qualified moderate-income applicant. Green or reusable building materials will be used whenever feasible. The home will have a 30-year deed restriction that allows modest equity upon resale, but mandates that it be sold at an affordable price to another income-eligible family. In lieu of a down payment, the future homeowner will complete 300 hours of sweat equity helping to build their new Habitat home.

Funds for the project will be raised through the collaborative efforts of PARTNER, Morris Habitat for Humanity and the local interfaith community. Sponsorships include a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) , a HOME grant  through Middlesex County and a Self-help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP) grant from HUD.  Sponsors for the project include Weichert, Realtors and PNC Bank.

But funds go just so far.  Volunteer help to complete the build is essential and Habitat will train those with limited experience. No construction skills needed! Come out once or as often as you can. Come alone, with family, friends, co-workers, etc. To lend a hand at the Perth Amboy build site, and perhaps learn some new skills, contact Morris Habitat for Humanity go to www.MorrisHabitat.org or call 973-891-1934.
