The white stuff began to fall in earnest late Thursday afternoon in northern New Jersey as a winter storm continued its journey along the eastern U.S.

Warnings were issued in advance to let residents know a severe storm encompassing a snowfall of 4-8 inches, blustery winds, near-blizzard conditions and bitterly cold temperatures was on its way. Not long after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo did the same, New Jersey's Gov. Chris Christie ordered a statewide state of emergency Thursday afternoon and urged motorists to "stay off the roads."

The Hopatcong and Sparta school districts announced Thursday night that public schools will be closed Friday.

NJ Transit said it will cross-honor tickets systemwide through Friday. DeCamp Bus Lines officials say it will also cross-honor NJ Transit tickets.

With the frozen precipitation no longer a mere prediction, other events will be cancelled or postponed and more important information will arise. We'll list the information we receive on this page and share its link on Facebook; if you know of cancellations or storm-related info, please share it here in the comments and on social media.
