Local Eagle Scout Donates to Food Pantry

17-year-old Sparta Eagle Scout collected food from residents at Stop & Shop Saturday.

A Sparta teen spent his Saturday morning at Stop & Shop with police working to collect food from residents to donate to a local food pantry.

Life Scout Matthew Maynard, 17, stood outside the supermarket with Sparta Police Sgt. John Paul Beebe for his Eagle Scout Project, "Pack A Cruiser Food Drive," Beebe said.

Through Maynard's project, he was able to collect many food items, and donated them to the Sparta Ecumenical Food Pantry located at the Sparta Presbyterian Church.

This pantry helps feed numerous needy families in Sussex County.

Beebe said that he and the Eagle Scout Candidate were able to collect so much food – ranging from cereal, to canned food and peanut butter – from generous residents that they couldn't fit everything in the patrol car, and started stacking the food items around the vehicle, he said.
