Nationwide Study Seeks Residents Interested in Helping Fight Cancer

The American Cancer Society and local groups want to recruit Northern New Jersey residents for a decades-long study.

A number of area organizations are joining the American Cancer Society in kicking off a volunteer recruitment effort for a national cancer prevention study—and they need residents' help.

Newton Medical Center, Sparta Cancer Center and the Sussex County YMCA will host a kick-off event with ACS Tuesday for the study, which is designed to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer.

During the event, participants will learn more about the importance of the study and how they can make an appointment to enroll during the month of November.

The Tuesday event is at 10 a.m. at Newton Medical Center, at 175 High St. in Newton.

Men and women who are willing to commit to this long-term study must be between the ages of 30 and 65 and must never have been diagnosed with cancer. To enroll, individuals provide a waist measurement, give a small blood sample and complete and complete a baseline and enrollment survey. Over the course of the study, participants will be asked to fill out follow-up surveys every few years for the next 20-30 years.
