Nor'easter Closes Hopatcong Schools, Further Strains Road Salt Supply

'Substantial amount of grit' needed to mix with salt for Hopatcong roads as storm could produce more than a foot of snow.

The Nor'easter that could produce more than a foot of snow has closed Hopatcong Schools Thursday and is expected to put a further strain on road treatment supplies.

According to a message on the Hopatcong Borough municipal website, a "substantial amount of grit" has been mixed with road salt due to the salt shortage.

"Please use extreme caution when driving," the message concludes.

Sparta crews have needed to prioritize how much salt to use on certain roadways due to its shortage.

The storm is expected to produce dangerous travel conditions Thursday with heavy snow mixing at times with sleet and freezing rain, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm warning has been issued until 6 a.m. Friday with 8 to 14 inches of snow and nearly an inch of ice possible, the NWS reported. The heavy wet snow combined with wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour could down limbs and power lines.

JCP&L customers without power should call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) and refer to the utility company's outage map.
