What Would You Improve in Hopatcong and Sparta in 2013?

If you could make a New Year's resolution for Hopatcong and Sparta, what would it be?

More than 45 percent of Americans make a resolution every year, according to statisticbrain.com. Some people vow to live a healthier lifestyle, others promise to spend more time with family, and many say they will try to save money.

As millions of Americans make resolutions to improve their lives, what could we do right here in Hopatcong and Sparta to make it an even better place to live?

Would you like to see the school district improve? Bring more business into the town center? Improve the community parks and fields?

What is on your Hopatcong and Sparta wish list? What is one thing you would improve in 2013?

Tell us in the comment section below or blog about why you love living here!

During 2013 Hopatcong and Sparta should work together and make concrete progress toward replacing JCP&L as our power provider. During January and February, the two towns should set up a panel to research what is required to withdraw from JCP&L and if new legislation is required if we wished to establish a municipally owned utility. The panel should also research the steps required to join Sussex Rural Electric Cooperative. By June 30, the panel should provide the alternatives to the communities and start scheduling public meetings to explain what is required and what it would cost us. (there may have to be a surcharge to cover infrastructure costs although lower electric rates could offset a significant part). After the meetings, a referendum should be held, probably as part of the November elections and if approved, the towns should move forward so that by next year at this time, we can be looking forward to a new power provider and more reliable service. Being left without power, and everything it provides, for 2 weeks in 2012 is unacceptable and we need to take charge of our own infrastructure.

That is a very good idea. I still have to wonder, will this mean that we still will be at JCP&L's mercy since they would be supplying the power into the area? I believe that is how it works in the areas in Sussex County that have already formed a cooperative.

I agree with beach bum. Lower river sticks needs to be done, a full facelift. I know the town is working on it. What about that eye sore on lakeside Boulevard where the truck stop is? I've heard rumors I have a car wash there? There needs to be a Wow factor coming into Hopatcong.

I totally agree with the move to replace JCP&L for Hopatcong & Sparta - Hopatcong needs to bring in business and revitalize lower river styx road as well as Lakeside Blvd - Hopatcong needs a full face lift and a move to bring a better over all image for the town, town just NEVER had any wow factor its just dull and has a dirty look to its appearance - Sparta has always looked good, Sparta knows how to bring and keep business and also keep that polished appearance

Reduce the Sewer Tax perhaps? I can't think of another soul on this planet paying 1500$ a year just to flush the toilet. Perhaps a better DPW (Or at least one that is not run by ignorant people) ...They just dug up in front of my house to fix a broken water main leavin a giant dirt mound and they "Cant get to it until the spring some time"....I also have 2x 100 foot widow Makers looming dangersouly close to the road and power lines....When I contacted the DPW and mentioned to them that this is borough property I got a reply of "What do you want us to do about it?" ...of course if I try to take them down the cops will be there in 30 seconds flat to ticket me for being on borough property.
