Hopatcong Flutist Performs with State's Top Freshmen

Laura Willis, 14, performs with Region I Junior Band.

She's hitting all the right notes.

Hopatcong freshman Laura Willis was one of 11 flutists selected to play in the 51st Annual Region I Band on March 27 at West Morris Central High School. Willis was picked a month ago during auditions at Paramus High School.

Her father, Ron, credited high school band director Matt Testa with much of Willis' success.

"He seems to have brought a lot of energy to the district," Ron Willis said. "I've seen it in the marching band and in the great strides they've made. And I think he's having an impact in the classroom as well."

Ron Willis said his daughter hopes to inspire younger musicians in Hopatcong.

"There's a lot of talent right here in our town," Ron Willis said. "I'm convinced of that. But it's all about that access. And now that's Laura's made it, other kids will aspire to play at a higher level and say, 'Hey, if Laura can do it, why can't I?'"
