5 Lake Hopatcong Books to Buy This Summer

Read up on the history of the state's largest man-made lake before hitting its beaches.

We get it. Sometimes it feels like there's nothing happening in Hopatcong. And when we get bored with the mundane, we reflect.

Enter: Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum. The place at the is filled with all kinds of neat exhibits detailing the borough's past. Unfortunately, it's closed during the summer.

Not to worry. There are five books at the museum to satisfy your Hopatcong history fix from home.

  1. You Need "A Century of Summers:" The Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club's First Hundred Years:" The 120-page hardcover book is filled with photos and facts commemorating the yacht club's centennial. Cost: $25.
  2. You Need "Lake Hopatcong Then & Now 2008:" OK, so it's 2011. So what? Not much has changed on the lake in three years, and this book features some of its coolest sights of the early 1900s. Check out pictures of where hotels and pavilions once existed, photos of big-money cottages and old-time amusement parks. Cost: $30.
  3. You Need "Hopatcong, a Century of Memories:" A photo history of the borough's first 100 years, including shots of celebrities and landmarks. Cost: $15.
  4. You Need "Illustrated Guide to Lake Hopatcong For Season of 1898:" Woah, hello, retro. At 98 pages, it details what life was like on the lake more than a century ago. It also has a new introduction from Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum President Martin Kane. Cost: $15.
  5. You Need "Greetings From Bertrand Island Amusement Park:" More than 200 photographs can be found in this 128-page book, which features more than 20 pages in full cover. And while you're at it, a Bertrand Island Amusement Park commercial.
