5 Things About Sussex County Museums

Did you know there's 13 in the county? We've got a few more things you might not have known.

Sussex County has a lot of what you'd expect—cows, farms, towns your friends have never heard of.

But it also has 13 museums. That's right—a baker's dozen.

What could there be to commemorate in Sussex County, the state's most northwestern county? Apparently, a lot. Here are five things you need to know about Sussex County museums.

  1. You Need to Know About Rare Stuff: The Franklin Mineral Museum contains some mineral species found nowhere else on earth. It also has a mine replica and Native American artifacts. It's open from March to December.
  2. You Need to Know About a LOT of Animals: The Space Farms Zoo and Museum in Beemerville sits on more than 100 acres and hosts more than 500 animals, birds and reptiles. Space Farms also has antique cars, carriages, wagons, farm tools and more. It's open from May 1 to Oct. 31.
  3. You Need to Know About Recreating Indian History: At Waterloo in Stanhope, visitors can tour a recreated Lenape Indian Village, Victorian homes and even a blacksmith shop. Often, Waterloo hosts ethnic festivals, historic festivals and shows.
  4. You Need to Know About the Sussex County Historical Society: These guys are Sussex County history buff. Check out the Historical Society's memorabilia and a libray of histories, genealogies, ledgers and maps.
  5. You Need to Know About an Old Schoolhouse: The Monroe Stone Schoolhouse in Hardyston is a complete restoration of an early 19th century one-room school house. So next time you think area schools are inadequate, think how far we've come.
