Hopatcong Teens Awarded for Drug Education

Mayor Sylvia Petillo presents teens, non-profit leader with You Make a Difference honor.

Hopatcong Mayor Sylvia Petillo gave seven borough teenagers the You Make a Difference award for their participation with the Sussex County Center for Prevention & Counseling Community Trials Intervention program.

Gearht VanVoorhis, Bryan Fallon, Sam Madar, Brittany Bastedo, Stephen Maksymiv, Cliff Lundin and Lacey Krueger were also given Leadership Recognition certificates and Wal-Mart and iTunes gift cards from the Center for their service in the drug-awareness initiative.

"We are very proud that you looked beyond yourselves and found a way, through the CTI program, to reach out to your peers about the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse," Petillo said.

"And even though you may never know how many people were discouraged from experimenting with drugs and alcohol because of your intervention, you should be proud that you acted in their best interests and are wonderful role models for our youth."

Petillo also gave Center for Prevention & Counseling member Tina Thompson a You Make a Difference award for her work within Hopatcong.
