Hopatcong Turning Teal for Cancer

Borough resident hopes to raise ovarian cancer awareness throughout borough during September.

Don't be alarmed if you see teal plastic wrapped around trees or poles during September. It's just one Hopatcong woman's work to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Deanne Cornine will help promote ovarian cancer awareness on behalf of Turn the Towns Teal. Here's more from the charity.

"Honestly, we want people to know about [the disease]," . "It's known as the silent killer because the symptoms are so silent. You don't think of them as being signs of cancer."

This September, Hopatcong will go teal to raise awareness of ovarian cancer as part of the fifth-annual Turn The Towns Teal® campaign. Spearheaded locally by Deanne Cornine, Turn The Towns Teal® promotes awareness of the silent symptoms of ovarian cancer during September, National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Founded in 2007 by Gail MacNeil of Chatham, NJ, Turn the Towns Teal consists of volunteers tying biodegradable ribbons in and around town centers across the country, accompanied by the distribution of symptom cards and literature about ovarian cancer, the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the U.S.

In its first year, 2007, 40 New Jersey communities “turned teal.”  Today, in the campaign’s fifth year, Turn The Towns Teal has a presence in more than 30 states, including states as far west as California and Alaska, as far south as Florida and as far north as Maine.
