Hopatcong's Canine Officer Goes High Tech

K9 Officer Eli gets a passive RFID microchip installed.

Thanks to a donation from the Hopatcong Pound Project, Hopatcong's newest officer now has a way to be found if he is ever lost, said Lt. Thomas Kmetz.

The Hopatcong Police Department's Narcotics detection K-9 Eli has been implanted with a subdermal microchip implant by Hopatcong Animal Control Officer Dale Sloat.

A microchip implant is placed under the skin of an animal and is about the size of a large grain of rice and it employs passive Radio Frequency Identification technology.

The chip lacks an internal power source and remains inert until it is powered by the scanner.

If Eli is ever lost, the scan will show the all of the animal's information. Anyone who would like to purchase a microchip for their pet can contact Dale Sloat at (973) 398-5000.
