Ice (Ice, Baby), History Topped Last Week's Hopatcong Headlines

A look back at the borough's biggest news.

Last week was big on sports news. But the weather didn't cooperate and population data was released, too. Suffice to say it was a busy seven days in Hopatcong. Here's your chance to catch up on what you missed.

  • HOPATCONG GETS SMALLER: The borough saw its population decrease by more than 700 from 2000 through 2010, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau. Its minority populations also grew. Mayor Sylvia Petillo and Superintendent Dr. Charles Maranzano weren't surprised by the findings. Click here for the story.
  • ICE, ICE, BABY: Snow and ice forced Hopatcong schools into an early dismissal Tuesday and a cancellation Wednesday. Suffice to say it's been a rough winter. Click here for the dismissal story and here for the cancellation story.
  • FOR THE HISTORY BUFFS: Hopatcong High School Athletic Director Tom Vara knows who to throw a party. The Chiefs honored Hopatcong wrestling's 100-win club on Thursday, hanging banners from the raptors and inviting back its members for a ceremony mid-match against Dover, which Hopatcong won. • SEVEN HEAVEN: Hopatcong senior guard Matt Tobin exploded Friday night for 46 points—seven shy of a career 2,000—in a tense win over Randolph. Tobin dropped 20 fourth-quarter points and helped seal the victory with smooth free throws in the final minute. Click here for the story.
  • ARGUMENTS ABOUND: Tensions ran high after the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) presented its 2011 Lake Hopatcong water-level management plan at Monday night's Lake Hopatcong Commission meeting. The plan's drawdown rate and amount seemed the biggest bone of contention. Click here for the story.
