Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum President Martin Kane a few years back condensed the background of the state's largest man-made body of water for the Lake Hopatcong Commission's website.

Filled with facts from documents and photos currently stored at the Museum, Kane's account of Lake Hopatcong's rise as a summer resort in the late-1800's and subsequent decline after the Great Depression is detailed and thorough.

For example, did you know Lake Musconetcong, linked to Lake Hopatcong, was once known as the Stanhope Reservoir? Or that several big names called Lake Hopatcong home in the early part of the 20th Century?
