There are successful charity events. And there was Saturday's Hudson Farm Club Charity Hike, which might deserve its own category.
Hudson Farm Club, a shooting preserve in Byram and Andover, matched hiker's ages with donations, which the hikers were allowed to split between several Hopatcong groups. The result: 1,232 participants and $35,255 in donations.
"This was wonderful," event coordinator Jacki Hangley said.

In the end, Hopatcong's five youth sports organizations will split $12,134; three parent-teacher organizations will split $5,719; the fire department will receive $9,163; and Hopatcong police bloodhound Rosco will receive $6,813. Participating Hopatcong High School students had the option to donate to the junior class' project graduation fund, which will receive $1,426.
Hangley said the hike went smoothly despite the overwhelming turnout, which resulted in a donation double last year's. Hudson Farms has donated more than $110,000 to Hopatcong groups over the last five years, Hangley said.
