Power Back for Some Sparta Residents, Businesses

Sparta Police said some businesses and residents got their power back Wednesday night, but the majority of customers are still left without electricity.

According to Sgt. John Paul Beebe, businesses in the Sparta center around Stop & Shop and about half of the businesses in Lake Mohawk got their power restored around 6 p.m. on Wednesday. 

He said some residents in Lake Mohawk on East Shore Trail also got their power back at that time, but most are still left without electricity.

Two Shell gas stations in Sparta are set to open at 8 a.m. Thursday as well, Beebe said.

Beebe said JCP&L crews are still working to restore the remaining customers, with the estimation still at 7-10 days.

Police urge residents to call JCP&L at 1-88-544-4877 for power updates, and to turn off all major applicances until their power is restored.

Beebe said a shelter has been set up by the Red Cross at Sussex County Technical School located on North Church Road. All residents are invited to stay until power is restored.

According to a statement released by the police, the township offices are now open. If residents need to change medical devices, they can do so at Town Hall during regular businesses hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, police said.

Police said non potable water is available in Town Hall free of charge to all Sparta residents, but it must be boiled before drinking.
