Workout, Dinner to Benefit Hopatcong Kids in Need

Borough residents organize events to raise money for families.

Two Hopatcong boys are suffering from brain tumors. This week, two benefits will be aimed at helping their families.

Diana Rodriguez has put together a "Zumbathon" for Saturday at from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The money will go toward the families of Hopatcong children Kyle O'Brien and Brandon Vanderhoof, who each have brain tumors.

And on Sunday, the Lake Hopatcong Elks Lodge in Mount Arlington will host a dinner from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the O'Brien family. For $20, those attending will be treated to food, activities, beer, wine and soda. The event was organized by Delores Krowl, a Hopatcong Board of Education member.

Rodriguez said she came up with the idea for this charity event as she is a certified Zumba instructor as well as a lifelong resident of Hopatcong. She went to school with Jennifer O’Brien, Kyle’s mother, and that inspired her to create the fundraiser.

Rodriguez said she has attended various “Zumbathons,” which have had successful outcomes for charity.

Zumba is a new and increasingly popular workout which combines Latin and hip hop dance moves along with current music. Various Zumba instructors will be in attendance at Saturday’s event.

The event is open to the public. But if you are not able to attend, you can still make a donation to Jennifer O’Brien at: Little Angels Daycare, 50 Hopatchung Road, Hopatcong, NJ 07843.
