BOE Candidate Amber Charlebois—and Alter Ego Dr. Demo—Wants to Improve Schools

Charlebois, a professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University, says she can help improve the school district and get Hopatcong kids college-ready.

Hopatcong-Sparta Patch continues its periodic series introducing the candidates for local office who will appear on the ballot of the Nov. 5 general election. In this installment, we hear from Board of Education hopeful Amber Charlebois in her campaign's own words. Municipal, school and county candidates interested in placing a statement or article in Patch regarding their candidacies may send materials to natalie.davis@patch.com.

Amber Charlebois, a mom, a professor and a volunteer in the schools, hopes to be elected to the Hopatcong Board of Education this Nov. 5. Charlebois and her husband have three children in the school district, ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Earlier this year she decided to run for the school board in effort to bring about a positive change in Hopatcong Schools so that she can confidently keep her children in district for their educational needs. She believes that her experience would be instrumental in helping the district raise the bar and increase their statewide rankings.

Charlebois has a Ph.D. in organic chemistry and teaches chemistry at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison.  As a college professor, she understands not only what it takes to get kids into college, but also what it takes for students to successfully graduate from college. In addition, she has grant writing experience, which may come in handy for some novel fundraising efforts for the BOE.

Finally, Charlebois is Dr. Demo in her free time. She brings fun, interactive, and hands-on-experiments into the Hopatcong classrooms.

“It is important for me to be involved in my children’s education and to be physically present in their classrooms," she said. "I believe that if we, as parents, could spend just one hour each month in our children’s classroom we would all feel more connected and unified.”

Charlebois has attended all of the board meetings since declaring her candidacy in June including the special board meeting in August and the first of three Strategic Planning Meetings held in early October. If elected, she plans to give her time and energy to the issues of school safety, curriculum enhancement in science and mathematics, and increasing parental involvement.

Charlebois concludes, “I am very excited to take on a more active role and to be part of the positive change in Hopatcong District. The bottom line is that I have HOPE for Hopatcong!”
