Character Counts at Durban Avenue School

A Hopatcong elementary school shows increasing kindness and tolerance starts with respect.

Hopatcong Borough Schools are continuing to push positivity in the district through character education. The most recent effort in this regard is at Durban Avenue Elementary School, where guidance counselor Dr. Donna-Jean Lynott has been leading discussions with students on holding the Six Pillars of Character as a way of life.

This character education program, which has the slogan, "Character Counts: Know It, Show It," runs throughout the school year and is dedicated to the idea that each child’s unique identity and character matter. The program is intended as a reminder for students to show kindness and to be respectful of others.

"Students have worked to create puzzle pieces of their own to represent their own individual characteristics and interests, which have then been beautifully displayed [as] one complete puzzle in the hallway of Durban Avenue Elementary for all to see," explained Superintendent of Schools Cynthia Randina.

A message posted beside the puzzle reads:

We discovered that joined together, we all belong.

We are the C.U.R.E., the Children United to Respect Everyone.
Each piece of this puzzle represents student at the Durban Ave. School.

The teachers and staff at Durban Avenue Elementary School dedicate time to the importance of appreciating differences in others and respecting that, although we come in all shapes and sizes, we all fit perfectly into one great big puzzle.

Don’t be the missing piece!
