First Gay Couple Ties the Knot in Sparta Township

Lake Mohawk lovebirds Neal Poquette and Jim Smith, committed to one another for four decades, made their union legal last week.

Marriage equality has come to Sparta. Lake Mohawk residents Neal Poquette, 67, and 66-year-old Jim Smith, in love and committed to each other for 40 years, are now lawfully wedded husbands after finally being joined in legal matrimony at the Municipal Building Thursday evening, the New Jersey Herald reported.

Mayor Gil Gibbs presided at what was the first same-sex wedding in Sparta, and perhaps in Sussex County. Last Monday, New Jersey became the nation’s 14th state to legalize so-called gay marriage. At least seven Sussex same-gender couples applied for licenses on Oct. 21, the Herald said.
