Hopatcong High Marching Band Gets Boost from Lake Hopatcong Elks

One of the area's premier charity-minded groups steps up to help teen musicians keep marching.

When the Hopatcong High School Marching Band lost its funding due to budget cuts a few years ago, band parents took over fundraising to keep the program going, and that effort has continued over time. This year, parents say they have received about 50 percent of the funding the band needs, but more help is needed, and the Lake Hopatcong Elks Lodge #782 is stepping up to help.

On Friday, the group will make a contribution of $1,500 for the band at a presentation at the Elks Lodge, 201 Howard Blvd. in Mt. Arlington at 7 p.m.

Giving to local schools is nothing new for the organization. According to a statement from the Elks, its members are pleased to lend a hand to school programs in need of assistance. In 2011, the chapter made a contribution of $4,000 to the high school’s golf team, when it too was in danger of being discontinued for lack of funding due to budget cuts.
