Sparta Dominates River Dell to Win State Title at MetLife

Check out the video and photo highlights from the Spartans' convincing victory Saturday morning.

In the end, the Sparta High School Spartans could not be stopped. In fact, its opponent couldn't even get started. Sparta routed River Dell 40-0 in football at MetLife Stadium, earning the NJSIAA/Atlantic Health Section 1, Group 3 state championship.

“This is exactly the way we wanted to go out,” said Sparta quarterback Matt Seville. "We put a lot of points up and a zero on the board for the defense."

Sparta led by 27 at the half and never gave River Dell an inch. The Spartans’ early lead meant River Dell had to press offensively. Every drop back for opposing quarterback Pat McPartland was an absolute battle. The defensive front seven for Spartans was just too much for River Dell to handle.

"These guys have given such an effort since June 10,” said Sparta coach Frank Marchiano. "This was a total team effort. Offense, defense and special teams did all the things that are necessary for a team to win. I just can’t say how proud I am of this team."
