Peter Sands, Chemical Engineer, Father of 2 of Sparta, Dies at 50

Sands is remembered for his devotion to his kids and for how much he enjoyed tinkering with family members' cars.

Peter Sands died Dec. 23, 2013, at Compassionate Care Hospice in Dover after a long illness, according to a notice on the website of the Goble Funeral Home. He was 50 years old.

The South Hackensack native lived in Sparta with his family for the past 18 years.  He had been employed as a chemical engineer with BASF of Peekskill, N.Y. for the past few months, but previously spent 17 years with Novartis Corporation.

Sands' family said he took great pride in his children: recent Penn State University graduate Peter and Christina, a licensed New Jersey cosmetologist. They said he loved watching his son play sports, assisted as his son's baseball coach, and enjoyed tinkering with his family's cars.

Peter Sands is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dorothy Kriete Sands; children Peter John Sands and Christina Elizabeth Sands; mother Joanne Sands of Sparta; sister Cathy Maher and brother-in-law Stephen Maher of Powhatan, Va., and their children, Loren, Christopher and Kevin Maher.

Visitation is scheduled Friday from 4-8 p.m. at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St. Sparta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at Our Lady of the Lake RC Church, 294 S. Sparta Ave., followed by a private cremation.

Memorial contributions may be made in Peter Sands' name to the National Kidney Foundation Finance Dept. 30 E. 33rd St., New York, N.Y. 10016.
