Viola M. Meadows, Masters Level Bridge Player, Dies at 94

Viola M. Meadows, who spent 20 years of her life as a Sparta Township resident, died Tuesday in Newton surrounded by her family, according to a notice on the website of Goble Funeral Home. She was 94 years of age.

She was born in Rockford, Ill., on the Fourth of July in 1919, attended Rockford Business College and earned certification as a medical librarian from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. In Illinois, she became known for her civic work; Meadows Park in Rockford was named in her honor.

Meadows moved to Sparta's Lake Mohawk in 1985 with her husband John, who died in 1995. She relocated to Andover Township in 2005.

Those who knew and loved her best say family, friends, faith and the game of bridge were the cornerstones of her life. She was a masters-level bridge player and was passionate about studying maps and debating others on a variety of subjects.

Vi Meadows is survived by daughters Janet Mina of Andover Township and Barbara Haase of Glen Ridge; sons-in-law Art Mina and Marty Haase; grandchildren Michael Mina of Lexington, Ky.,  Brett and Blair Holleman of Los Angeles, and Blake and Nina Haase of Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.; six grandchildren and extended family members in Illinois and California.

A visitation will take place 5-7 p.m. Friday at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta. A private family interment will follow Saturday.

The family said it would appreciate donations to the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice Memorial Foundation, 99 Sparta Ave., Newton, N.J. 07860, in the name of Viola M. Meadows.
