$100 of Change, Gold Stolen in Hopatcong Home Burglary

Home had been left empty for about 50 minutes, police said.

About $500 worth of change and jewelry were reported stolen from an Amherst Way home in Hopatcong on Wednesday, according to Hopatcong Police Lt. Thomas Kmetz.

Police officers were called to the home after the burglary was reported between 11 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. When they arrived, the owner told officers someone had entered the house and taken approximately $100 worth of change out of a 5 gallon water jug in the bedroom.

The owner also reported a gold rope chain necklace with a Jesus pendant worth $400 stolen.

At the time of the alleged burglary, the homeowner's 15-year-old was presumed to be home but said he had left with friends for about 50 minutes. He did not remember whether or not he locked the door, Kmetz said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hopatcong Police Department at 973-398-5000.
