Cops: Driver Tries to Conceal Marijuana By Consuming Drug

Union City man faces several charges following motor vehicle stop on Route 15.

A Union City man consumed as much as 50 grams of marijuana in an attempt to conceal the drug during a motor vehicle stop on Route 15, Sparta Police said.

Diego F. Diaz-Rubio was charged with possession of 50 grams or less of marijuana, tampering with evidence, driving with a suspended license and registration, possession of drugs in a motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle and three equipment violation summonses.

According to Sgt. John-Paul Beebe, Officer Daniel Elig conducted a motor vehicle stop on March 8 of Diaz when he discovered the registration and driver's license of the owner were suspended.

While speaking with Diaz, the officer detected a strong odor of raw marijuana, Beebe said. Diaz said there wasn't any drugs in the vehicle, Beebe said.

As Diaz was being arrested for driving while suspended, he consumed 50 grams or less of marijuana, Beebe said.

Diaz was charged and released on his own recognizance.
