Cops: Drunk Man Steals Quick Chek Snacks

Stanhope man charged with shoplifting, driving while intoxicated and having an open container.

A 27-year-old Stanhope man drove drunk to and then stole snacks, police said.

Officer Christopher Lotito responded to the store for a report of a male walking into things at 2:06 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

Outside, Lotito found Scott Stanley sitting with his cell phone plugged into a Quick Chek outlet, police said. Stanley appeared highly intoxicated as Lotito tried speaking with him, police said.

There was one vehicle in the Quick Chek parking lot, and it was registered under Stanley's name, police said. But when asked if he drove to the store, Stanley told Lotito he walked, police said.

Stanley finally admitted driving to Lotito after the officer said he'd review Quick Chek's security tapes, police said.

As Stanley was being arrested, he pulled out a Kit Kat Bar and Chex Mix, which he told Lotito he had brought from home, police said. But Quick Chek employees told police Stanley had stolen the items, and when asked again, Stanley admitted to the theft, police said.

Stanley was arrested and taken to the , where he was charged with shoplifting, driving while intoxicated and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, police said.

Stanley was later released to a friend, police said.
