Cops: Man, Slumped Over Wheel, Had Drugs

A Hopatcong man was slumped over his steering wheel with medications for which he didn't have a prescription, police said.

Officer William Sutphen responded to the intersection of Hopatchung Road and Chincopee Avenue for a report of a driver asleep in his car at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Sutphen found 21-year-old Dan Lane of Hopatcong slumped over his steering wheel with his foot on the brake, police said. After Lane woke up, Sutphen found Lane to be intoxicated, but not from alcohol, police said.

Sgt. Megan Antonello, a drug-recognition expert, gave Lane field sobriety tests, which he failed, police said. Lane possessed morphine sulfate and hydrocodone without prescriptions, police said. He also had a white straw with white powder residue in it, police said.

Lane was arrested and brought to the , police said.

Lane was charged with driving while intoxicated, two counts of possessing a schedule 1 narcotic, reckless driving, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and possession of paraphernalia.

Lane was processed and released to a family member, police said.
