Cops: Relative Steals Nearly $4K in Jewelry While Residents Away

Sparta woman pawned the jewelry to buy heroin, police said.

A relative stole nearly $4,000 worth of jewelry from Hopatcong residents while they were away on a cruise, police said.

Carly Gallo, 22, of Sparta, was charged with third-degree theft after stealing $3,900 worth of jewelry from a Cove Road residence while the homeowners were away, Lt. Thomas Kmetz said.

Gallo, who is related to the homeowners, entered the residence unannounced and a house-sitter saw her with jewelry, needles and empty folds of heroin, Kmetz said.

Gallo pawned the jewelry at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall to buy heroin, Kmetz said.

Gallo was lodged at the Sussex County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail with no 10 percent option.
