Crime Rate Decreases in Hopatcong in 2011

Violent crime rate stays the same, non-violent crime rate sees major decrease in state report.

The New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report showed Hopatcong's overall crime rate to decrease between 2010 and 2011.

The report, released last week, stated that reported burglaries decreased from 30 incidents in 2010 to 23 in 2011 and there were 40 less larceny incidents (100 to 60) in 2011.

Violent crime cases, however, stayed the same at seven incidents, while non-violent crimes saw a major decrease from 130 incidents in 2010 to 88 in 2011.

In 2010, there were five aggrevated assault incidents included in the report while seven were reported in 2011. There were also five motor vehicle thefts in the borough in 2011, and none reported in 2010.

Hopatcong's Crime Index Total went down significantly in 2011 from 137 to 95.

The information collected by state police is based on a 2010 estimated population of 15,147 people and a borough area of 10.80 square miles. Hopatcong is classified as a "suburban" community by state police.

Violent crimes, which are classified as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, stayed the same statewide, according to New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa.
