Crime Rate Decreases in Sparta in 2011

Violent crime rate has slight increase, while non-violent crime rate decreases.

The New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report showed Sparta's overall crime rate to decrease between 2010 and 2011.

The report, released last week, stated that reported larceny incidents from 116 incidents in 2010 to 93 in 2011 and there was one less aggrevated assault incident (2 to 1) in 2010.

Violent crime cases, however, slightly increased with three incidents in 2011 from one in 2010, while non-violent crimes saw a decrease from 132 incidents in 2010 to 111 in 2011.

In 2010, there were was one motor vehicle theft in the township and none reported in 2011.

Sparta's Crime Index Total saw a big decline in 2011 from 133 to 114.

The information collected by state police is based on a 2010 estimated population of 19,722 people and a borough area of 38.48 square miles. Sparta is classified as a "suburban" community by state police.

Violent crimes, which are classified as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, stayed the same statewide, according to New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa.
