Drunken Sparta Man Slams Into Trees, Boulder, Police Say

23-year-old escaped serious injury in crash near the intersection of Sparta Avenue and Fox Run Road.

A Sparta man was drunk when he lost control of his vehicle and struck several trees and a boulder early Saturday morning, police said.

Remington C. Vokoun, 23, was charged with DWI, reckless driving, failure to maintain a single lane of travel and failure to have liability insurance.

Vokoun was bloody and suffered a broken ankle after his 1992 Toyota Camry left the roadway near the intersection of Sparta Avenue and Fox Run Road at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Sgt. John-Paul Beebe said.

According to Beebe, Vokoun was traveling southbound on Sparta Avenue at a high rate of speed when he lost control, the vehicle swerved to the right and left the roadway, striking several trees before coming to rest when it hit a large boulder.

Vokoun could not explain how he lost control of the car, but admitted he drank at least 10 beers, according to Beebe.

Vokoun was transported by the Sparta First Aid Squad to Morristown Medical Center for treatment and a blood sample was obtained.

Vokoun was released and is scheduled to appear in Sparta Municipal Court Feb. 13 at 8:30 a.m.
