Fake Superstorm-Sandy Relief Fund Out of Sparta Will be Dissolved

Funds raised will be distributed to legitimate charity organizations.

The Sparta couple that started a fraudulent Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund, soliciting $631,000 from at least 1,999 people in the alleged scheme, has been ordered by a Superior Court to dissolve the organization, according to a report.

John Sandberg, 31, and Christina Terraccino, 27, were named in a state lawsuit after being under investigation in February by the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs. Authorities said the couple started the organization and collected money without registering for charity status. Authorities also alleged at least $13,000 of $631,000 raised went directly to Sandberg and Terraccino's bank accounts.

State Sen. Steven Oroho called the actions of the couple "unforgiveable." Donors who contributed to the organization through PayPal were refunded as the company agreed to cooperate with law enforcement.

As part of the settlement, a judge ruled that the contributions be distributed out by an administrator and the organization be dissolved, the Alternative Press reported. The couple could also be forced to pay $79,195.18 if they violate their settlement agreement.
